An Introduction to Hydraulics of Fine Sediment Transport

This book presents observations on the phenomena of fine sediment transport and their explanations under process-related divisions such as flocculation, erosion, and deposition. The text is a compilation of the author's lecture notes from nearly four decades of teaching and guiding graduate students in civil and coastal engineering. Illustrations of fine sediment transport processes and their complexities given in the book are taken from field and laboratory-based observations by the author and his students, as well as numerous investigators. The wide-ranging composition of particles (of inorganic and organic matter), their universal presence and their complex interactions with hydraulic for...

Alcohol Use Disorders and the Lung

Alcohol Use Disorders and the Lung: A Clinical and Pathophysiological Approach is an excellent resource for clinicians who care for individuals affected by alcohol use disorders in diverse settings. Although alcohol abuse alone does not cause acute lung injury, it renders the lung susceptible to dysfunction in response to the inflammatory stresses of sepsis, trauma, and other clinical conditions recognized to cause acute lung injury. In parallel, these same pathophysiological effects of alcohol abuse significantly increase the risk of a wide range of serious lung infections. Many clinicians involved in the primary treatment of alcohol use disorders, such as addiction psychiatrists, will find...

Coastal and Estuarine Fine Sediment Processes

Hardbound. The INTERCOH series of conferences bring together the world's leading researchers and practitioners in cohesive sediment transport processes to share recent insights. This book presents papers that examine the spectrum of fine sediment transport related science and engineering, including the basics and applications of flocculation, settling, deposition, and erosion, advanced numerical models used in engineering practice, and applications to mud flats and harbor siltation.

Estuarine Cohesive Sediment Dynamics

The background for the Workshop on Cohesive Sediment Dynamics - . !!!!!. Special Reference to Physical Processes in Estuaries is briefly outlined in Chapter I. Here I wish to acknowledge those whose support I consider to be pivotal to this under taking. My deepest appreciation goes to Cynthia Vey, whose organizational skills and dedicated effort made the completion of this volume possible. Thanks are also due to Gail Terry for workshop organization, Jean Branson for word processing and Lillean Pieter for helping with drawings. Finally, I must express my sincere appreciation to Arthur Ezra 9f the National Science Foundation for providing support (through Grant No. CEE-8401185) for the worksho...

Introduction To Hydraulics Of Fine Sediment Transport, An (Second Edition)

This book expounds the hydraulics of fine sediment which is almost ubiquitously found in coastal and estuarine waters, and in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Although the basic subject may be categorized as applied marine physics in shallow waters, several physicochemical and biological effects on particulate transport have been addressed. In this second edition most of the chapters have been substantially updated, rewritten, and expanded. Overall, a significant change has also been made throughout by replacing sediment concentration, a unit dependent quantity at the heart of numerous descriptions, measurements, and calculations, with the nondimensional sediment volume fraction. It marks a div...

Deposition of Fine Sediments in Turbulent Flows

Deposition of fine cohesive sediments in a turbulent flow field was studied in a system of a rotating annular channel and ring. The percentage of the total sediment that a given flow can maintain in suspension depends only on the bed shear stress and is independent of the initial sediment concentration. The percentage (C) of the depositable sediment deposited at time t has been found to vary with time according to the law (C = alpha logt + beta), where the coefficient a is independent of the flow conditions and sediment concentration, while the coefficient b is a function of the bed shear stress only. Both a and b depend on the physiochemical properties of the sediment and the water environment. Deposition rates are proportional to the depositable sediment concentration and inversely proportional to time.

Coastal Zones and Estuaries

Coastal Zones and Estuaries is a component of Encyclopedia of Environmental and Ecological Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources which is part of the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. The Theme deals with important links of water, sediment, and nutrients between continents and oceans. The present behavior of sea level, ice sheets, and coral reefs is still a matter of controversy and concern. Coastal experiences learned in developed countries should be used to improve coastal policies world wide. Within the Global Change Programme, it is recognized that the earth system is characterized by critical limits and abrupt changes. The coastal systems are particularly sensitive to these changes. This volume is aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students, Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers and NGOs.
