Comics and Power

  • Categories: Art

Many introductions to comics scholarship books begin with an anecdote recounting the author’s childhood experiences reading comics, thereby testifying to the power of comics to engage and impact youth, but comics and power are intertwined in a numbers of ways that go beyond concern for children’s reading habits. Comics and Power presents very different methods of studying the complex and diverse relationship between comics and power. Divided into three sections, its 14 chapters discuss how comics interact with, reproduce, and/or challenge existing power structures – from the comics medium and its institutions to discourses about art, subjectivity, identity, and communities. The contributors and their work, as such, represent a new generation of comics research that combines the study of comics as a unique art form with a focus on the ways in which comics – like any other medium – participate in shaping the societies of which they are part.

Real Fun

Ever wonder what indie rockers on tour do for the other 23 hours of their day? Real Fun answers that question with over 100 photographs of musicians lounging in the giant green room that is the world--sleeping, eating, fishing and just goofing off. Photographer Ashod Simonian has traveled with scores of bands, and his dreamy, lush Polaroids capture Death Cab for Cutie, Spoon, Sleater Kinney, Pavement, Jenny Lewis, the Shins, Wilco and Broken Social Scene, among many others, in colorful images conveying not just stories but the feelings behind them: boredom, exultation, frustration and bliss. Many of the performers have also contributed essays and memoirs, making this an essential compendium of wisdom and memories from the road. Others have recorded songs for the accompanying CD. The tracks were all selected by Simonian and most are original, recorded especially for this project. All of this is well and good, but what makes Real Fun more than a scrapbook is Simonian's acute photographic instincts, his eye for detail and sense of scene: compelling pictures regardless of the subject.

Filmlandia!

From Twin Peaks to Twilight, from Practical Magic to Portlandia!, Filmlandia! highlights more than 200 film and television entertainments created and centered in Seattle, Portland, and the greater Pacific Northwest, extensively researched and curated by culture writer David Schmader. The PNW has a thriving, rich film culture, and it's finally celebrated in a guide as visually arresting and compelling as the films and television themselves! More than 200 entries are included and feature: • Hilarious, insightful synopses • Behind-the-scene facts and trivia • Regional scenic highlights In addition, sidebars pepper the pages, covering: • Regional filmmakers like Gus Van Sant and Lynn Shelton • Television shows that shaped the public's perception of the region (such as Twin Peaks, Shrill, and Portlandia!) • Documentaries, queer cinema, silent films, Vancouver-shot imposters, and more. Colorful artwork, inspired by the primary VHS color palette of the 80s, turns this handy guide into a visual treat as well.
