Durability Design of Concrete Structures
Concrete structures can be designed for durability by applying the principles and procedures of reliability theory combined with traditional structural design. This book is the first systematic attempt to introduce into structural design a general theory of structural reliability and existing calculation models for common degradation processes. It covers both the theoretical background and practical design for service life and includes worked examples which highlight the application of the design procedure and methods.
Interdisciplinary Design
Architects and engineers both claim to be designers, though how they define design and the approaches they use to realize it, vary widely. However their interaction has also created some of the world's most memorable, enduring and impressive buildings. The unprecedented impact of digital technologies illuminates the complexity and non-linearity of the process that these designers go through while massively expanding both the ability to visualize and represent forms, and to analyze their structural behavior. It has obviously changed both architecture and engineering, and so also the potential for interaction between them. Interdisciplinary Design began as a course at Harvard GSD attended by graduate students in architecture and also by MIT graduate students in structural engineering and computation. In this course students and instructors examined a series of built projects in order to develop new viewpoints and communication across disciplinary boundaries in teaching, practice and construction.

Echinoderms: Munchen
Since 1972, scientists from all over the world working on fundamental questions of echinoderm biology and palaeontology have conferred every three years to exchange current views and results. The 11th International Echinoderm Conference held at the University of Munich, Germany, from 6-10 October 2003,continued this tradition. This volume comprises 95 submitted papers and 96 abstracts covering a wide spectrum from innovative student contributions to the lessons learnt from experienced specialists. The content of the contributions ranges from original research results to the latest synopses concerning a variety of topics, including visual sensing, larval cloning, mutable collagenous tissues, sea urchin aqua-culture, deuterostome phylogeny, palaeobiology and taphonomy.
Improvement of Buildings' Structural Quality by New Technologies
Around 100 scientists from 21 countries contributed to the four years of assembled works contained in this volume. Launched in May 2000, the aims of this cooperative action were: * to develop, combine and disseminate new technical engineering technologies * to improve the quality of urban buildings * to propose new technical solutions to architects and planners * to reduce the disturbance caused by construction in urban areas and improve urban quality of life. Reliability Theory and Its Application in Structural and Soil Mechanics
The proceedings contain lectures and short papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on »Reliability Theory and Its Application in Structural and Soil Me chanics», Bornholm, Denmark, August 31 -September 9,1982. The proceedings are organized in two parts. The first part contains 12 papers by the invited lecturers and the second part contains 23 papers by participants plus one paper from an invited lecturer (la~e arrival). The Institute dealt with specific topics on application of modem reliability theories in structural engineering and soil mechanics. Both fundamental theory and more ad vanced theory were covered. Lecture courses were followed by tutorial and summary discussions with active participation of those attending the Institute. Special lectures of topical subjects were given by a number of invited speake~, leading to plenary dis cussions and summary statements on important aspects of application of modem .re liability theory in structural engineering and soil mechanics. A great number of the participants presented brief reports of their own research activities.
