A new interpretation of the work of Bramante, suggesting an agenda for contemporary architectural practice In On Bramante, architect Pier Paolo Tamburelli considers the work of the celebrated Italian Renaissance architect Donato Bramante and through this reappraisal suggests a possible agenda for current architectural practice. Bramante, Tamburelli argues, offers an excellent starting point to imagine a contemporary theory of space, to reflect on the relationship between architecture and politics, and to look back—with neither nostalgia nor contempt—at the tradition of Western classicism. Starting from a discussion of the difference in the work of Bramante in Milan (1481–1499) and Rome...

Oase 105: Practices of Drawing

It is hard to overstate the importance of drawing for architectural practice. Ever since antiquity, architects have relied on drawings to conceptualize ideas, provide instructions for workers and construct their ideas into architecture. This involvement with drawing has always been mediated through different technologies; drawing is technology. The specific practices of drawing have changed over time, however, adapting to changing technologies. In doing so they have altered the production of architecture.00This issue of OASE looks at architectural drawings as dynamic processes that shape architectural thinking. To give insight into the relation between the tools and techniques for drawing, a...

In the modern city, everyday life is increasingly moving towards the inside of buildings. The interiors of department stores, market halls, administration buildings, museums or theatres are part of the experience of the urban dweller. Every inner world of the city has its own character atmosphere and representative architectural language that supports its specific societal significance. In contemporary practice, these differences have largely disappeared; the logic of standardization blurs differences in meaning, but also in atmosphere. The more the exterior of buildings is invested with spectacular gestures, the more banal their interiors seem to become. Rather than registering this disappearance, this issue of OASE examines a range of strategies and design instruments for the public urban interior. The editors look for architectural projects for interiors that derive their significance from a specific approach and show a recognizable element of authorship. Bron: Flaptekst, uitgeversinformatie.

Migration is a multifaceted phenomenon that plays a critical role in today’s world, yet there have been few attempts to look beneath the surface of the mass movements of people. Particularly, the changing face of migration is becoming more feminized, with women increasingly moving as independent or single migrants rather than as the wives, mothers, or daughters of male migrants. Yet, in literature on migration, the voices of women are still silent. This creates an urgent need to advance academic research on female international migration by examining women as independent migrants. Immigrant Women’s Voices and Integrating Feminism Into Migration Theory comprehensively documents the experi...
