The question of how music and politics interact has always aroused passionate debate, and it looms large in this study of the Soviet proletarian music movement. The proletarian music movement was the driving force behind many of the developments in early Soviet musical life, and its influence was felt long after the groups that belonged to it disbanded in 1932. It consisted of politicians, composers, musicologists, performers and educators who were united by their desire to create a dictatorship of the proletariat in musical life, and develop musical forms that responded to the needs of their new society. Based largely on primary and contemporary secondary sources, this book charts the history of the proletarian music movement, examines its beliefs, and discusses its work in the fields of musical education, amateur musical activities and composition. It discusses the origins of important characteristics of Soviet musical life, sheds light on a neglected area of early Soviet cultural history, examines how the cultural apparatus was mobilised to instil a political ideology, and challenges how Soviet musical life of the 1920s has traditionally been viewed.

Pippi Longstocking meets Heidi meets Anne Shirley in this tale of an irrepressible girl in a mountain village who navigates unexpected changes with warmth and humor. Speed and self-confidence, that’s Astrid’s motto. Nicknamed “the little thunderbolt,” she loves to spend her days racing down the hillside on her sled, singing loudly as she goes, and visiting Gunnvald, her grumpy, septuagenarian best friend and godfather, who makes hot chocolate from real chocolate bars. She just wishes there were other children to share her hair-raising adventures with. But Astrid’s world is about to be turned upside down by two startling arrivals to the village of Glimmerdal: first a new family, then a mysterious, towering woman who everyone seems to know but Astrid. It turns out that Gunnvald has been keeping a big secret from his goddaughter, one that will test their friendship to its limits. Astrid is not too happy about some of these upheavals in Glimmerdal — but, luckily, she has a plan to set things right.
Advances in second language teaching methodology, including new emphases on communicative language teaching and learner-centeredness, have significantly changed the roles teachers play in the classroom, making ever greater demands upon their classroom management skills. For Nunan and Lamb, "management" refers to the planning and creation of a positive pedagogical environment which facilitates learning. They focus on the kinds of professional decisions teachers must make to ensure that learning takes place effectively. The ultimate aim of the book is to help teachers and teachers-in-preparation become "self-directed" by providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to take effective control of the teaching and learning processes in their classrooms. The Self-directed Teacher prepares teachers to make independent decisions in key areas such as lesson planning, teacher talk, group work, error correction, resource management, and evaluation. The text uses a task-based approach, and the material presented is well supported by theory and research.
