This volume presents a biographical register of 460 members of the secular clergy licensed in theology at the University of Paris between 1373 and 1500. The register is preceded by a discussion of the sources used in its preparation and a list of all the clerics--religious as well as secular--licensed in Paris between 1373 and 1500. Appended to the register is an index listing all those licensed belonging to the secular clergy arranged according to their first names and an index of those licensed arranged according to college affiliation. The register is offered in service to historians of the medieval university, as well as those interested in the professoriate of the premier theological faculty of the day.

This book explores the legal and theological thought of Master Vacarius (c.1115/20 - c.1200), the renowned twelfth-century jurist. It focuses on this Italian master's four works, composed in the second half of the twelfth century, which deal with the resolution of conflict in law and theology. Vacarius is a paradox for scholars. They have found it difficult to reconcile his role as a legal teacher, notably through his textbook the Liber pauperum ('Book of the Poor'), which established a school of Roman law at Oxford, with his 'extra-legal' works on marriage, Christology and heretical theology. This study accounts for this paradox by exploring these three extra-legal treatises, composed in the 1160s and 1170s, in light of Vacarius' legal textbook. The author argues that Vacarius applies the legal method of the ius commune (European common law) to theological and sacramental debates. In this way, Vacarius represents a trend in medieval intellectual history, particular to the twelfth-century renaissance, which has been little appreciated to date - the hermeneutic of the 'lawyer-theologian'.
Through the foundation of the universities at Prague (1348), the Roman-German Empire caught up with and integrated itself into the European cultural space of universities, one of the consequences being a constant rise of the number of students. The studies collected in this volume analyse the acceptance and social effects of this process, comparing German and European phenomena. They concentrate on university members, students and graduates of extremely different origins, following the parameters of status, parental ties, group affiliation, and networks: crucial moments include the access to university, studies and leisure activities, the converging aspects of social and academic hierarchy and finally the application of academic expertise in different professional environments. The main focus thus lies on the medieval universities’ contribution to the creation of a modern "society of knowledge".
