“… a diverse and stimulating group of essays that together represents a significant contribution to thinking about the nascent field of contemporary Asian art studies … Contemporary Asian Art and Exhibitions: Connectivities and World-making … brings together essays by significant academics, curators and artist working in Australia, Asia and the United Kingdom that reflect on contemporary art in the Asia-Pacific region, and Australia’s cultural interconnections with Asia. 'Arts in the Margins of World Encounters' presents original contributions that deal with artworks of differently marginalized people—such as ethnic minorities, refugees, immigrants, disabled people, and descendants of slaves—, a wide variety of art forms—like clay figures, textile, paintings, poems, museum exhibits and theatre performances—, and original data based on committed, long-term fieldwork and/or archival research in Brazil, Martinique, Rwanda, India, Indonesia, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. The volume develops theoretical approaches inspired by innovative theorists and is based on currently debated analytical categories including the ethnographic turn in contemporary art, polycentric aesthetics, and aesthetic cannibalization, among others. This collection also incorporates fascinating and intriguing contemporary cases, but with solid theoretical arguments and grounds. 'Arts in the Margins of World Encounters' will appeal to students at all levels, scholars, and practitioners in arts, aesthetics, anthropology, social inequality, and discrimination, as well as researchers in other fields, including post-colonialism and cultural organizations.

The purpose of my thesis is to develop a better understanding of how visual fine artists, through field-based research, can meld subject disciplines about environment with creative art outputs. The thesis comprises two parts: studio research with accompanying exegesis (60%), and dissertation (40%). The research is inter-disciplinary, with a crossover between visual arts and sciences. The thesis developed from the premise that the world is undergoing an environmental crisis and solutions will require a multifaceted approach that includes the visual fine arts. The purpose of the studio research was to develop a new way of looking at ecosystems - one that is both aesthetic and scientifically in...

Nolan on Nolan

Painting is, I suppose, meant to be a way of getting rid of lies. Sidney Nolan (1917-1992), myth maker and creator of the iconic Ned Kelly images, is one of the most significant artists Australia has produced. In this distinctive book, the artist becomes his own subject. Extracts from his notebooks, diaries, letters, interviews and poetry take us on the intellectual and emotional journeys which carried him around the world and which kept his art, and often his life, outside the comfort zone. The material from the notebooks, published here for the first time, offers unique insight into Nolan's creative process, while the collection as a whole reveals a complex personality and an artist who resists stylistic categorisation. It expands and recasts perceptions of his views on art making, friendships, travel, music and literature, throwing new light on his work.

Deceptively simple, Valamanesh's work is often made with elemental substances, natural materials found objects - for example Persian Carpets, an old photo of his grandmother or a pair of worn shoes resonating with cultural and personal associations.

Musician and visual artist Di Bresciani's first book explored the synchronicities of colour and sound as they were referenced in her paintings at that time. Di Bresciani: A New Look at Australian Light concentrates on light and its importance to so many aspects of human sensory perception. Even more particularly, Bresciani's recent paintings, with their colours and compositional rhythms, are based on the perceptions of Australian light as the artist has experienced it. "A view of Australian light that is subtle and changing, a light that transforms colours and landscape in delicate, fleeting and subtle ways. It contrasts totally with the harshness of bright sunlight at other times of day. Th...
