Kafka

Telling the story of Kafka's final years as never before—the third volume in the acclaimed definitive biography This volume of Reiner Stach's acclaimed and definitive biography of Franz Kafka tells the story of the final years of the writer's life, from 1916 to 1924—a period during which the world Kafka had known came to an end. Stach's riveting narrative, which reflects the latest findings about Kafka's life and works, draws readers in with nearly cinematic precision, zooming in for extreme close-ups of Kafka's personal life, then pulling back for panoramic shots of a wider world blighted by World War I, disease, and inflation. In these years, Kafka was spared military service at the fr...

The Scientific Group Thermodata Europe (SGTE) is a consortium involved in the development and application of thermodynamic databanks for materials such as metals. Building on SGTE research, the second edition of this standard reference presents thermodynamic calculations as the basic tools in developing and optimizing various materials and processes. The SGTE Casebook: Thermodynamics at Work, Second Edition shows how this data can optimize the production and quality of steel and other alloys. The book explores phases stable at equilibrium as well as their amounts and compositions, and provides information about the degree of instability of the phases not present at equilibrium

The Organic Chemistry of Nickel, Volume I: Organonickel Complexes is devoted to a description of the organonickel complexes. The major goal is to provide a reference work, and for this reason a conventional layout has been adopted with separate chapters devoted to each type of organic ligand. In the interest of readability, known compounds have been assembled in tables at the end of each chapter, thereby allowing the text to be used for discussions of the general chemistry involved and to highlight the special reactions associated with nickel. Conscious of the needs of organometallic chemists, the authors included systems in which no nickel-carbon bond is involved. Among these is a chapter on the tetrakisligand nickel complexes and sections on dioxygen and azobenzene complexes. The nitrosyl complexes and complexes containing a metal-metal bond—topics frequently considered to be part of the domain of the organometallic chemist—have not received individual attention. Tables of the observed bond distances in organonickel complexes are provided as an Appendix; a short list of the more important review articles relevant to each organic ligand can be found at the end of each chapter.

The 17th European Symposium on Computed Aided Process Engineering contains papers presented at the 17th European Symposium of Computer Aided Process Engineering (ESCAPE 17) held in Bucharest, Romania, from 27-30 May 2007. The ESCAPE series serves as a forum for scientists and engineers from academia and industry to discuss progress achieved in the area of Computer Aided Process Engineering (CAPE). The main goal was to emphasize the continuity in research of innovative concepts and systematic design methods as well the diversity of applications emerged from the demands of sustainable development. ESCAPE 17 highlights the progresss software technology needed for implementing simulation based t...
