The 16th ICSMGE responds to the needs of the engineering and construction community, promoting dialog and exchange between academia and practice in various aspects of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. This is reflected in the central theme of the conference 'Geotechnology in Harmony with the Global Environment'. The proceedings of the conference are of great interest for geo-engineers and researchers in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. Volume 1 contains 5 plenary session lectures, the Terzaghi Oration, Heritage Lecture, and 3 papers presented in the major project session. Volumes 2, 3, and 4 contain papers with the following topics: Soil mechanics in general; Infrastructure and mobility; Environmental issues of geotechnical engineering; Enhancing natural disaster reduction systems; Professional practice and education. Volume 5 contains the report of practitioner/academic forum, 20 general reports, a summary of the sessions and workshops held during the conference.

Understanding the mechanical behavior of solids and contacts (interfaces and joints) is vital for the analysis, design, and maintenance of engineering systems. Materials may simultaneously experience the effects of many factors such as elastic, plastic, and creep strains; different loading (stress) paths; volume change under shear stress; and microcracking leading to fracture and failure, strain softening, or degradation. Typically, the available models account for only one factor at a time; however, the disturbed state concept (DSC) with the hierarchical single-surface (HISS) plasticity is a unified modeling approach that can allow for numerous factors simultaneously, and in an integrated m...

Manchester of the East

Manchester of the East

Kanpur was a tiny hamlet until the railways arrived in India, and later a British garrison. The bloody events during the 1857 War of Independence led to a clampdown on the city, and under rigorous British supervision, industry began. The wars that Britain was fighting in South Africa, Russia and Afghanistan furthered the development of Kanpur into a hub of supply for the best military boots and other leather goods. Mills were set up and by 1900s, Kanpur became synonymous with high-quality products and top-of-the-class mills. Both Indians and Europeans were responsible for this transformation of a tiny dot on the map of the Indian subcontinent into the world's best supply-centre for leather, cotton, jute and other materials. In this rivetting account of the transformation of a hamlet into what became known as the Manchester of the East, Suraj Prasad Mehra describes the evolution of the city over two hundred years from the 1800s. He introduces us to events and incidents as well as individuals and governments that were responsible for making Kanpur what it eventually became and what it is today.

This is the twenty-ninth volume in the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute's series, Connections: The EERI Oral History Series. EERI began this series to preserve the recollections of some of those who have had pioneering careers in the field of earthquake engineering. Significant, even revolutionary, changes have occurred in earthquake engineering since individuals first began thinking in modern, scientific ways about how to protect construction and society from earthquakes. The Connections series helps document this important history. This volume in the EERI Oral History Series presents the life and career of Anil K. Chopra, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil and Environme...
