Last Man Standing

An intimate look and "a detailed account" (Booklist) of the career of Baltimore Colts’ running back Tom Matte and his celebrated stint as an emergency quarterback. In 1965, Colts’ running back Tom Matte became the first emergency quarterback in NFL history when both the legendary Johnny Unitas and his backup were hurt in consecutive weeks late in the season. Wearing a wristband to remember the plays, Matte ultimately played three consecutive games at quarterback for the Colts: the first a must-win game against the Los Angeles Rams, followed by a controversial playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers, and finally a victory over the Dallas Cowboys in what was formerly known as the Runner-up B...

Rethinking the Crit

Assessment in architecture and creative arts schools has traditionally adopted a ‘one size fits all’ approach by using the ‘crit’, where students pin up their work, make a presentation and receive verbal feedback in front of peers and academic staff. In addition to increasing stress and inhibiting learning, which may impact more depending on gender and ethnicity, the adversarial structure of the ‘crit’ reinforces power imbalances and thereby ultimately contributes to the reproduction of dominant cultural paradigms. This book critically examines the pedagogical theory underlying this approach, discusses recent critiques of this approach and the reality of the ‘crit’ is examined through analysis of practice. The book explores the challenges for education and describes how changes to feedback in education can shape the future of architecture and the creative arts.

The Death of Peter Pan

To fall in love, really in love, would be an awfully big adventure. Renowned Scottish playwright, James Matthew Barrie, lies abed, unable to sleep, dreading the anniversary of one of the most tragic moments of his life. Lulled by the persuasive power of the syringe, he falls into a fitful sleep as the events play out in his mind. It's Armistice Night in London and Michael Llewelyn Davies, one of Barrie's adopted sons and one of the models for Peter Pan, celebrates with friends when he runs into the mysterious Rupert Buxton. They meet again in Paris, and later at Barrie's retreat on the Scottish island of Eilean Shona where the relationship between the two men becomes passionate. Will their l...

Chicago Top 40 Charts 1970-1979 examines the Windy City's top hits as documented by the weekly record store surveys issued by radio station WLS. As rock 'n' roll music entered its third decade, it was finding itself increasingly fragmented, which challenged the ratings dominance top 40 radio had exhibited throughout the 1960s. But while FM listening overtook AM in the rest of the country by the decade's end, Chicago was the exception. WLS managed to stave off its competition with their commitment to playing Chicago's favorite music- regardless of genre. That music is documented in this book. Chicago Top 40 Charts 1970-1979 lists every song to reach the WLS survey alphabetically by title and artist, with debut and peak dates, highest position reached and number of weeks on the charts. The top songs of each year and for the entire decade are ranked as well. As an added bonus, it features the "Big 89 Artists of the 1970s". For those who grew up listening to Chicago radio as well as for record collectors from anywhere, Chicago Top 40 Charts 1970-1979 will be a valued addition to their music reference libraries.

Bill Warren's Keep Watching the Skies! was originally published in two volumes, in 1982 and 1986. It was then greatly expanded in what we called the 21st Century Edition, with new entries on several films and revisions and expansions of the commentary on every film. In addition to a detailed plot synopsis, full cast and credit listings, and an overview of the critical reception of each film, Warren delivers richly informative assessments of the films and a wealth of insights and anecdotes about their making. The book contains 273 photographs (many rare, 35 in color), has seven useful appendices, and concludes with an enormous index. This book is also available in hardcover format (ISBN 978-0-7864-4230-0).
