Landscapes and Landforms of Belgium and Luxembourg
This book provides an informative and intriguing overview of the most scenic landscapes of Belgium and Luxembourg. Geodiversity is emphasized, for example the periglacial features in the Hautes Fagnes area, the planation surfaces in the Ardennes and Oesling, and the famous caves of Han/Lesse and Remouchamps. The book’s chief goals are to provide the reader with enjoyable and informative descriptions of the selected sites within their regional geographical and geological settings; to offer an up-to-date survey of the evolution of Belgium’s and Luxembourg’s landscape; and to share additional information on the cultural value of the respective sites wherever appropriate. Laurent-Benoît Dewez (1731–1812), Architect in the Age of Enlightenment
Laurent-Benoît Dewez (1731-1812), court architect to Charles of Lorraine, was the most outstanding architect of his time in the Southern Low Countries. After studying in Italy and serving in the eminent office of Robert Adam in London, Dewez developed a personal, classical style that came to embody the “Eglise Belgique” under the Austrian Habsburgs. He designed numerous castles, abbeys, and churches across Belgium, but time has not been kind to his legacy: of his 80 architectural projects, many have vanished. However, the Château de Seneffe, the abbey of Vlierbeek in Leuven, and the churches in Andenne, Floreffe, and Harelbeke still stand as testaments to his remarkable talent. This richly illustrated monograph presents, for the first time, a comprehensive collection and analysis of the complete works of Laurent-Benoît Dewez.
Rural Granaries in Northern Gaul (Sixth Century BCE – Fourth Century CE)
In recent years, storage has come to the fore as a central aspect of ancient economies. However studies have hitherto focused on urban and military storage. Although archaeological excavations of rural granaries are numerous, their evidence has yet to be fully taken into account. Such is the ambition of Rural Granaries in Northern Gaul (Sixth Century BCE – Fourth Century CE). Focusing on northern Gaul, this volume starts by discussing at length the possibility of quantifying storage capacities and, through them, agrarian production. Building on this first part, the second half of the book sketches the evolution of rural storage in Gaul from the Iron Age to Late Antiquity, setting firmly archaeological evidence in the historical context of the Roman Empire.
