Dynamic Agricultural Household Bio-Economic Simulator (DAHBSIM) model description
DAHBSIM is a dynamic, bio-economic model of agricultural households that was designed to be applied to a rural, developing country-setting, for the purpose of addressing questions around the biophysical constraints to on-farm agricultural productivity, and the whole-farm implications of alternative strategies to sustainable agricultural intensification. The model links socio-economic and biophysical aspects, in order to better illustrate the environmental and human welfare implications of different agricultural production practices, as they are influenced by policy-driven changes in prices of inputs or outputs, or by changes in the physical environment.
The Common Agricultural Policy after the Fischler Reform
Providing an updated state of the art report on the effects of the 2003 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform, this volume has a particular emphasis on the governance of institutional changes and national/regional implementation. Environmental and Agricultural Modelling:
Agriculture increasingly faces the challenge of balancing its multiple functions in a sustainable way. Integrated assessment and modelling (IAM) can provide insight into the potential impacts of policy changes. However, concepts to address the wide range of issues and functions typical for agriculture are still scarce. Environmental and Agricultural Modelling reviews and presents our current understanding of integrated and working tools to assess and compute, ex-ante, alternative agricultural and environmental policy options, allowing: 1. Analysis at the full range of scales (farm to European Union and global) whilst focusing on the most important issues emerging at each scale; 2. Analysis of the environmental, economic and social contributions of agricultural systems towards sustainable rural development and rural viability; 3. Analysis of a broad range of issues and agents of change, such as climate change, environmental policies, rural development options, effects of an enlarging EU, international competition, and effects on developing countries.
Sustainable Cropping Systems
Global crop production must substantially increase to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population. This is constrained by the availability of nutrients, water, and land. There is also an urgent need to reduce the negative environmental impacts of crop production. Collectively, these issues represent one of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century. Sustainable cropping systems based on ecological principles are the core of integrated approaches to solve this critical challenge. This special issue provides an international basis for revealing the underlying mechanisms of sustainable cropping systems to drive agronomic innovations. It includes review and original research articles that report novel scientific findings on improvement in cropping systems related to crop yields and their resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors, resource use efficiency, environmental impact, sustainability, and ecosystem services.

Symposium: Soziale Nachhaltigkeit
Mit den im September 2015 von den Vereinten Nationen verabschiedeten Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) der Agenda 2030 wurden erstmals soziale und ökologische Nachhaltigkeitsziele systematisch verknüpft. Bei den sozialen Nachhaltigkeitszielen wurden ebenfalls erstmals auch die Industrieländer zum Adressaten und nicht ausschließlich die sogenannten Entwicklungsländer. Inwieweit verändern sich jedoch soziale und vor allem sozialpolitische Modernisierungsziele im Kontext der Nachhaltigkeitsperspektive? Lässt sich überhaupt von Sozialer Nachhaltigkeit sprechen und wenn ja, was ist damit genau gemeint? Genügen die unter dem Begriff sozial-ökologische Forschung und Politik formulierten Fragestellungen den komplexen Anforderungen der SDG und eines Programms zur Sozialen Nachhaltigkeit? Da hier berechtigte Zweifel bestehen, beauftragte das IASS im Sommer 2016 das ISÖ mit einer Studie zu >Soziale Nachhaltigkeit. Soziale Nachhaltigkeit der Landwirtschaft
Die Studie untersucht die soziale Dimension der Nachhaltigkeit in der Landwirtschaft am Beispiel eines Vergleichs ökologischer und konventioneller landwirtschaftlicher Systeme. Die Studie hat in zweifacher Hinsicht explorativen Charakter. Zum einen ist die soziale Dimension der Nachhaltigkeit bislang erstaunlich wenig beforscht und erfordert konzeptionelle Klärungen, die Landwirtschaft wird insoweit beispielhaft betrachtet. Zum anderen erstaunt, dass sich die Nachhaltigkeit der ökologischen gegenüber der konventionellen Landwirtschaft empirisch nicht so einfach nachweisen lässt, die Untersuchung der sozialen Dimension könnte hier zur wissenschaftlichen Klärung beitragen.
Evaluation des systèmes de production face aux changements climatiques
Ce travail presente une evaluation de l'effet du changement climatique dans le Nord de la Tunisie et de l'impact de la mise en place de quelques strategies d'adaptation. L'analyse comparative des resultats relatifs a l'evolution du systeme socio- economique et environnemental des differentes exploitations entre le scenario BASE (situation sans changement climatique) et le scenario REF (situation avec changement climatique: augmentation de l'evapotranspiration de 9,3% et de la salinite de l'eau) montre qu'il existe des exploitations qui arrivent a maintenir leurs marges nettes sans modifier le mode de fonctionnement mis en place. Celles-ci sont caracterisees par un mode de culture diversifie, base essentiellement sur les grandes cultures et le maraichage. La simulation de la mise en place de nouvelles techniques d'irrigation a permis d'ameliorer les rendements. En effet, 25% des exploitations ont realise une augmentation de leurs marges nettes par rapport a la situation sans changement de technique d'irrigation; Pour les resultats environnementaux, l'introduction des nouvelles techniques d'irrigation n'a pas montre de changements significatifs pour la salinite du sol.
