Practicing Christians, Practical Atheists

The task of living faithfully within today's secular culture is one of the most important issues facing Christians. Yet many misunderstand what culture is and how it shapes their hearts, minds, and souls. This book extends the work of James K. A. Smith by revealing how the secularizing influence of modern culture is not only transmitted through "cultural liturgies," but has become embedded within the seemingly harmless practices everyday practices of education, work, consumption, and leisure. As a result, even practicing Christians may become practical atheists who have thoroughly internalized secular dispositions of mind and heart. This deeper understanding of cultural formation calls into question many of the dominant approaches to ministry and formation. Rather than merely offering information and inspiration, congregations must become sites of counter-formation that enable their members to fully embody the Christian faith within everyday life.

Max Weber laid the foundations for the meaning of ‘charisma’ in modern secular usage. This new volume argues for the importance of the ‘charismatic principle’ in history, economics and society. This volume brings together a number of contributors at the cross section between economics, theology, sociology and politics in order to set a research agenda for the following issues: What does it means to have a ‘charism’? How does it work in society? How might one distinguish a ‘charism’ from a talent? Are ‘charism’s given only to "special" people, or are they also present in ordinary people? Is a ‘charism’ necessarily associated with religion, or, is it, as we submit, poss...

This book shares the stories of 65 Gohman ancestors who grew up next to the Mississippi River in Central Minnesota. They are the third-generation members of the Gohman family that immigrated from Lower Saxony, Germany, to the United States in 1843 and migrated from Cincinnati to Minnesota in 1855. The first and second generations are introduced briefly. The lives of the Third-Generation spanned a period from 1868 to 1991, an amazing 123 years. Generally engaged as farmers, they were diverse personalities who responded to life experiences in diverse ways. They lived through times of both great prosperity and deep poverty. They experienced two world wars and dramatically changing technology. This generation of the Gohman family thrived as they adapted to the changes in their lives from the horse and buggy times to the days of the jet plane.

Traces how the day has served as a key organizing concept in Roman culture—and beyond. How did ancient Romans keep track of time? What constituted a day in ancient Rome was not the same twenty-four hours we know today. In The Ordered Day, James Ker traces how the day served as a key organizing concept, both in antiquity and in modern receptions of ancient Rome. Romans used the story of how the day emerged as a unit of sociocultural time to give order to their own civic and imperial history. Ancient literary descriptions of people's daily routines articulated distinctive forms of life within the social order. And in the imperial period and beyond, outsiders—such as early Christians in the...
