THE HANDS RESTORING THE EARTH

Eschewing technical jargon, this is the living, breathing story of a unique venture by the Livelihoods impact investment funds and their partners to restore damaged ecosystems and reinvent more sustainable methods of farming. Right across the world from Sumatra to Senegal, Madagascar and the Ganges Valley, rural communities whose livelihoods depend directly on the climate, the soil, the water and the plant and animal diversity of their environment have proved that it is possible to rebuild an ecosystem and alleviate poverty at the same time. If there is one lesson to be learnt from Livelihoods’ experience in the field and its bold experiments, it is that seemingly disparate worlds can find common cause. One might imagine that major international companies and isolated villages in Africa, Asia and Latin America have nothing in common. That there is a yawning gulf between NGOs driven by ideals and businesses driven by profit, between the so-called private sector and the public interest. But in practice, the ongoing adventure of Livelihoods is proof positive that this apparent gulf can be bridged to form productive and beneficial alliances.

Protecting the World's Oceans

The World Ocean Conference (WOC) 2009 and Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) Summit week was the first large-scale international event to bring together both ocean and climate change stakeholders and specialists. The presentations and panel discussions held during WOC 2009 highlighted the central role of oceans in the climate change response, drew attention to the resulting challenges for oceans and small-island developing states (SIDSs), and called on all stakeholders led by governments and their development partners, nongovernment organizations, and the private sector to take immediate action to adapt to or mitigate the impacts of climate change. This publication is a summary of the major and recurring themes discussed during that week.

Origins of Impressionism

"This handsome publication, which accompanies a major exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a lively and engaging account of the artistic scene in Paris in the 1860s, the years that witnessed the beginnings of Impressionism. For the first time the interactions and relationships among the group of painters who became known as the Impressionists are examined without the overworn art historical polarities commonly evoked: academic versus avant-garde, classicist versus romantic, realist versus impressionist. A host of strong personalities contributed to this history, and their style evolved into a new way of looking at the world. These artists wanted above all to give an impression of...

Operation 'Torch' North Africa

When the western Allies decided to launch a second front in North Africa, they carefully considered the anti-British feeling left in France by the ill-advised attack by the Royal Navy on the French Fleet at Mers el Kébir in July 1940. Consequently, the operation was given an American rather than a British complexion, General Eisenhower was chosen to lead a mostly American force into battle and the major Royal Navy contribution was kept as inconspicuous as possible. This operation marked the first time that American troops fought against German forces during the Second World War. They had a rough baptism of fire in southern Tunisia in February 1943, training, equipment and leadership failed ...
