This book provides the first analysis of the evolution of the Mudejar of conquered Muslim community of Xàtiva from its foundation after the Christian conquest in 1244 until 1327. Using the Mudejar revolt of 1276 as a turning point, it examines the political, social, economic and religious foundations of the community, and compares the status of the Mudejar generation of the conquest with later generations. An analysis of the increased Christian acculturative pressure on the Mudejars shows that the Mudejars of Xàtiva did not remain passive, but responded with emigration and frequent appeals to the crown. Based on extensive archival reserach, it provides a much needed study of the largest and most important Mudejar community in the kingdom of Valencia.

Between Christian and Jew

Between Christian and Jew

In 1341 in Aragon, a Jewish convert to Christianity was sentenced to death, only to be pulled from the burning stake and into a formal religious interrogation. His confession was as astonishing to his inquisitors as his brush with mortality is to us: the condemned man described a Jewish conspiracy to persuade recent converts to denounce their newfound Christian faith. His claims were corroborated by witnesses and became the catalyst for a series of trials that unfolded over the course of the next twenty months. Between Christian and Jew closely analyzes these events, which Paola Tartakoff considers paradigmatic of inquisitorial proceedings against Jews in the period. The trials also serve as...

Enveloping Algebras

This is an English edition of Dixmier's book, which is the first systematic exposition of the algebraic approach to representations of Lie groups via representations of (or modules over) the corresponding universal enveloping algebras, turned out to be so well written that even today it remains one of the main textbooks and reference books on the subject. In 1992, Dixmier was awarded the Leroy P. Steele prize for expository writing in mathematics. The Committee's citation described this as one of Dixmier's "extraordinary books". Written with unique precision and elegance, the book provides the reader with insight and understanding of this very important subject. It can be an excellent textbook for a graduate course, as well as a very useful source of references in the theory of universal enveloping algebras, the area of mathematics that remains as important today as it was 20 years ago. For the 1996 edition the author updated the status of open problems and added some relevant references.

Barcelona and Its Rulers, 1096-1291

This volume examines the early growth of Barcelona and the formation of its ruling classes. The city did not at first grow because of overseas trade but because of market-oriented agriculture and tribute from Islamic Spain. Only after a difficult adjustment did the city develop the commercial foundations which would later ensure its prosperity. Barcelona's patriciate rose to prominence during the second stage of growth, its rise forming part of a profound restructuring of territorial power in response to the 'feudal crisis' that challenged traditional authority throughout Catalonia. Patrician families did not model themselves after noble patrilineages, but forged marital alliances in which the wife's dowry played a fundamental role. In this new book the family structure of the patriciate receives close examination and many traditional assumptions about the nature of Mediterranean towns are challenged.

Uncertainty in Comparative Law and Legal History

  • Categories: Law

Laws are imposed on facts. But what is the law to do when its rules for establishing facts do not—because they cannot—produce a satisfactory answer? Scenarios that raise this intractable uncertainty problem have been treated as isolated concerns, but are in fact endemic across legal systems. They can cross jurisdictional and doctrinal boundaries, have recurred throughout history, and demand creative thinking from those faced with them. This book explores the law’s understandings of and responses to such situations from a comparative historical perspective. It investigates how the law has framed these most difficult problems of uncertainty; dealt with uncertainty’s often unclear bound...

Device-Edge-Cloud Continuum

Device-Edge-Cloud Continuum

This book focuses on both theoretical and practical aspects of the “Device-Edge-Cloud continuum”, a development approach aimed at the seamless provision of next-generation cyber-physical services through the dynamic orchestration of heterogeneous computing resources, located at different distances to the user and featured by different peculiarities (high responsiveness, high computing power, etc.). The book specifically explores recent advances in paradigms, architectures, models, and applications for the “Device-Edge-Cloud continuum”, which raises many 'in-the-small' and 'in-the-large' issues involving device programming, system architectures and methods for the development of IoT ecosystem. In this direction, the contributions presented in the book propose original solutions and aim at relevant domains spanning from healthcare to industry, agriculture and transportation.
