Lullaby for Lakeside

"Every summer, Claire visits Auntie Cree at her home at Lakeside, a small northern Ohio town on the shores of Lake Erie. And every summer, the town teachers the young girl something new about life. As Claire forms new friendships and delas with the intense challenges of growing up, the residents of Lakeside likewise grow and change and mature. Like the rest of America in the 1960s, Lakeside deals with racism, anti-Semitism, and homophobia -- and each time, the community finds a way to come together and overcome any differences. A female real-estate agent bravely claims her right to work in a man's world. A mother's suicide threatens to claim her son's life as well. Two elderly ladies fall in love and shock the town's morally conservative residents. Lullaby for Lakeside is a nostalgic love song to endless summer days, small-town America, and a quieter (if no less complicated) era." --

38th Clinical Aphasiology Conference

This issue is made up of research findings presented at the 38th Clinical Aphasiology Conference. In keeping with the mission of CAC to foster new and innovative methods of assessment and treatment, and to stimulate scholarly discussion, the papers span the spectrum of approaches to aphasia and related neurogenic communication disorders, and present the very latest thinking in the field. Since its inception, CAC has promoted the development of research in clinical aspects of aphasiology, with the focus being on improving the communication between those with aphasia and their significant others. The papers in this issue continue this focus, with authors integrating theoretical and practical issues in order to forge ahead in this endeavour. From analysis and treatment of specific linguistic behaviours to interviews with people with aphasia and their families, to careful description of treatments involving everyday conversations, the papers demonstrate the range of approaches now possible in the treatment of aphasia. Further developments and potential integration of these different perspectives promises an exciting future for aphasia therapy.

Paying for the Party

In an era of skyrocketing tuition and concern over whether college is “worth it,” Paying for the Party is an indispensable contribution to the dialogue assessing the state of American higher education. A powerful exposé of unmet obligations and misplaced priorities, it explains in detail why so many leave college with so little to show for it.

Fifteen-year-old Braden Brad Cleary comes from a family that has always faulted others for their own misfortunes in life. To put it bluntly-the Clearys hate people of color. Thirteen-year-old Beth Ann Armstrong is biracial child whose father harbors exceptional bitterness toward whites. As Beth grows up next to Braden, she has no idea the Cleary family is off -limits. She and Braden are too naïve to understand their families' hatred toward one another. Known throughout the town as troublemakers, the Clearys have built up a horrifying reputation. And, as soon as they see their son talking to Beth, they call the sheriff to haul Braden away and frame him for a crime he did not commit- their hatred overpowering their love for Braden in their attempt to keep him away from Beth. Plagued by nightmares of Braden being taken away in a patrol car, Beth attempts to convince her father to intervene and help her friend, but instead, he lies and tells her that Braden has died in a tragic prison fight. Unaware of the truth, both Braden and Beth embark on their own journeys to return to the past and, in the process, discover that God does indeed work in mysterious ways.
