When students discuss what they want to include in their portfolio and why, and analyze which project or piece of writing meets those criteria, they are creating connections to learning far beyond the scope of traditional forms of assessment. Portfolios also increase learning because students: take responsibility for their learning; actively engage in the learning process; think about their own thinking; grow in confidence and self-esteem; set goals for future learning. Preparing Effective Teachers of Reading will show educators and administrators (K-12 and higher education) how a higher education initiative used collaboration and partnerships to respond to one of the greatest needs facing the nation--improving the reading achievement of poor and minority children. The book will also provide readers with a forum for understanding scientifically-based reading research (SBRR) and instruction, and the five essential components of reading. In addition, the book will showcase, through evaluation findings and a case study, how diverse geographic, ethnic, and racial institutions are creating national models for bridging the achievement gap in reading, teaching reading, preparing new teachers, and engaging key stakeholders by transforming curricula and syllabi, establishing reading centers, and providing directed teaching and tutoring experiences for candidates.

Case Studies in Preparation for the California Reading Competency Test

This concise, case-based text will help pre-service and practicing teachers prepare for the challenging California Reading Initiative Competency Assessment (RICA). Drs. Rossi and Schipper cover all domains, concepts, strategies and assessments required by RICA. The cases cover a wide variety of student profiles and grade-levels reflecting CA's school population, and include a variety of scenarios for whole classes, groups, and individual students. But the usefulness of this text goes well beyond RICA preparation; it's a terrific companion to any literacy methods text in teacher preparation courses at undergraduate and graduate levels. The real-life scenarios reflect the literacy learning situations teachers encounter in actual classrooms, and help teachers place their knowledge of reading methods and strategies into realistic contexts. All cases reflect research-based concepts and strategies covered in all major reading methods and diagnosis texts used in colleges and universities throughout the state of California.
