There is ‘no place like home’ sighs Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. A sentiment with heightened meaning in Britain 2020. There is no book like Broken Homes either.

Homes Fit for Heroes

"Despite Bill Brandt's fame and considerable influence on the development of modern photography, the photographs in this book are a little known body of work." "The photographs were taken between 1939 and 1943 when Brandt worked on a commercial assignment for the Bournville Village Trust which was set up by George Cadbury in 1900 to manage the Bournville Estate, a model housing development which he created near his factory on the outskirts of Birmingham. The prints and negatives have been with BVT for some 60 years." "The photographs illustrate the living conditions in a range of housing types. For example, the back-to-back slums built in the nineteenth century through to modern municipal housing built in the 1930s. The majority of the photographs were taken in Birmingham but also some in London where he looked at 'old residential' properties near to his own home in Camden Hill. London was undoubtedly one of Brandt's favourite subjects and these photographs, taken around 1943, are amongst a much larger body of work Brandt shot in the capital city during the war-years."--BOOK JACKET.

Bill Bryson was struck one day by the thought that we devote a lot more time to studying the battles and wars of history than to considering what history really consists of: centuries of people quietly going about their daily business - eating, sleeping and merely endeavouring to get more comfortable. And that most of the key discoveries for humankind can be fo...

Planet Property

Planet Property details the inner workings of the UK commercial property, residential development and rental markets. This first major book on the topic for 20 years maps these sectors between 1997 and 2012, during the ten-year boom, the 2008/9 financial crash and its protracted aftermath. Developers and investors made debt-fuelled fortunes during Tony Blair’s decade as Prime Minister, during which prices nearly doubled. The 2008 banking crisis led to the sharpest crash in 80 years, under Gordon Brown’s tenure, when prices halved. The biggest debt clear-up in history began under David Cameron. Planet Property is the first full guide to the £400 billion sector. The fast-paced book will a...
