The Pharmacist at the Crossroads of New Health Risks - an Indispensable Partner for Their Management

This publication contains the speeches and conclusions of a seminar held in October 1999, which looked at the role of the pharmacist as a co-guarantor of health security. The first theme was health challenges of the 21st Century, which included the safety of new therapies, the pharmacists role in risk management and the problems of the counterfeiting of drugs. The second theme concerned the challenges of the new technologies both the dangers of selling drugs over the internet and the opportunities of increased networking professional information. The final theme looked at the risks of the new technologies and the ways that the pharmacist could add value. The conclusions of the seminar will serve as the framework for a Resolution of the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers.

The Routledge History of Western Empires is an all new volume focusing on the history of Western Empires in a comparative and thematic perspective. Comprising of thirty-three original chapters arranged in eight thematic sections, the book explores European overseas expansion from the Age of Discovery to the Age of Decolonisation. Studies by both well-known historians and new scholars offer fresh, accessible perspectives on a multitude of themes ranging from colonialism in the Arctic to the scramble for the coral sea, from attitudes to the environment in the East Indies to plans for colonial settlement in Australasia. Chapters examine colonial attitudes towards poisonous animals and the histo...

Carl Wilhelm Scheele and Torbern Bergman

This book tells the story of two of the most important figures in the history of chemistry. Carl Wilhelm Scheele (1742–1786) was the first to prepare oxygen and realise that air is a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen; he also discovered many important organic and inorganic substances. His fellow chemist and good friend, Torbern Bergman (1735–1784), was one of the pioneers in analytical and physical chemistry. In this carefully researched biography, the author, Anders Lennartson, explains the chemistry of Scheele and Bergman while putting their discoveries in the context of other 18th-century chemistry. Much of the information contained in this work is available in English for the first time.

Metabolic Basis of Detoxication: Metabolism of Functional Groups considers the possible fates of the relatively circumscribed number of functional groups that xenobiotics bear. An understanding of the possible reactions, and the chemical and biological factors influencing them, will contribute to the overall predictability of the fate of "real" molecules. This approach attempts to knit together the understanding of metabolic pathways with that of the enzymes that catalyze the specific steps. The book contains 18 chapters and begins with a discussion of the biological oxidation of carbon atoms. This is followed by separate chapters on the metabolism of halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons, aryl...
