The limited liability company (GmbH) was created by the German legislature in 1892 as a company form without any historical forerunners or suggestions from comparative law. It brought about a readjustment of the relationship between the chance of profit and the liability risk. However, criticism from the jurisprudence that had not been included in the quick legislative process was also heard from the start. As early as 1892, Levin Goldschmidt expressed concern that the GmbH would replace 'principally more solid forms of company'. However, this criticism did not prevent the company form of the GmbH from being adopted in numerous European countries, or at least seriously considering its reception.

Czech Yearbook of International Law - Rights of Host States within the System of International Investment Protection - 2011

With the successful introduction in 2010 of the Czech Yearbook of International Law, Professor Alexander J. Bělohlávek and Professor Naděžda Rozehnalová, the editors, present the 2011 volume of this ambitious project. The second volume focuses on the admittedly controversial topics relating to a shift from the investors’ viewpoints on investment protection to the contrasting viewpoints of the host states, which are facing growing numbers of alleged claims by investors. Volume II has set as its objective to plot the shift in the paradigm towards a new balance between investors and host states in the investment protection system. Such a shift can be observed in the rising number of coun...

'One of the greatest European prose writers' Philip Roth In the autumn of 1965, Bohumil Hrabal bought a weekend cottage in the countryside east of Prague. There, until his death, he tended to an ever-growing, unruly community of cats. This is his confessional, tender and shocking meditation on the joys and torments of his life with them; how he became increasingly overwhelmed by the demands of the things he loved, even to the brink of madness. Václav Havel’s Meanings

No one in Czech politics or culture could match the international stature of Václav Havel at the time of his death in 2011. In the years since his passing, his legacy has only grown, as developments in the Czech Republic and elsewhere around the world continue to show the importance of his work and writing against a range of political and social ills, from autocratic brutality to messianic populism. This book looks squarely at the heart of Havel’s legacy: the rich corpus of texts he left behind. It analyzes the meanings of key concepts in Havel’s core vocabulary: truth, power, civil society, home, appeal, indifference, hotspot, theatre, prison, and responsibility. Where do these concept...
