European Margin Sediment Dynamics
This book provides acoustic images about sedimentary systems of the shelf edge, slope and deep-sea-floor. Data obtained by the European North Atlantic Margin and the STEAM Project shows areas of potential instability and deepwater sediment transport systems on the continental slope. The knowledge gained can be used by both academia and hydrocarbon industry so as to arrive at a better understanding of continental margins and the processes shaping them. It will also interest colleagues in earth sciences involved in margin surveys for environmental studies. The current global trend in marine resource development is to move into deeper water, and this book can provide examples relevant to other passive margins around the world. There is a growing need for reliable measurements in deep water and knowledge related to stabilisation. Slope stability problems will be identified with greater reliability, thus improving safety standards for coastal and offshore environmental policies.
Snake Venoms
The past decade has been a period of explosion of knowledge on the chemistry and pharmacology of snake toxins. Thanks to the development of protein chemistry, nearly a hundred snake toxins have been purified and sequenced, representing one of the largest families of sequenced proteins. Moreover, the mode of action of these toxins has been largely elucidated by the concerted efforts of pharmacologists, electro physiologists, and biochemists. As a result of these studies, some of the snake toxins, e.g., a-bungarotoxin and cobra neurotoxins, have been extensively used as specific markers in the study of the acetylcholine receptors. Neuropoisons
Poisons are topics of multidisciplinary concern. The clinician and the pathologist are sensitive to instances of human poisoning. The laboratory researcher, whether pharmacologist, physiologist, or biochemist, is oriented toward molecular modes of poison action. Both clinician and researcher are eager to learn of poisons that can be used as therapeutic agents or methodological tools. This volume is an attempt to underscore the multidisciplinary charac ter of neuropoisons. Six poisons of animal origin which are receiving considerable clinical and research attention are discussed. Each poison is presented first as a clinical entity, then as a topic of investigative research, and finally as an agent useful to the study of nerve function. Because no single volume on neuropoisons can be exhaustive, an attempt at balance is offered as compensation. Two snake venoms, two marine poisons, and two bacterial toxins are presented in detail. In the sequel to this volume, attention will be focused on representative neuro poisons of plant origin.
Sea Snake Toxinology
This is the latest book in the Venom and Toxin Series of publications produced by the Venom and Toxin Research Group, National University of Singapore. Containing chapter contributions by international authorities in the field covering some 13 countries in the Asia-Pacific region and lavishly illustrated, the work represents perhaps the most comprehensive and up-to-date material published on the subject in the last 15 years.
Poisons of Plant Origin
In Volume 1 of this series, attention was focused on neuropoisons of animal origin. In the present volume, attention has been shifted to poisons of plant origin. In both cases, we have attempted to identify those poisons for which there is a large measure of clinical or research interest. Our efforts in compiling the series have been aided by three groups of individuals. First, we are grateful to the investigators who contributed chapters. Their labors are the substance of this two-volume work. Second, we are pleased to acknowledge the support of Mr. Seymour Weingarten and Plenum Press in our project.
