Greek Architecture and Its Sculpture

From Athens and Arcadia on one side of the Aegean Sea and from Ionia, Lycia, and Karia on the other, this book brings together some of the great monuments of classical antiquity--among them two of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the later temple of Artemis at Ephesos and the Mausoleum at Halikarnassos. With 250 photographs and specially commissioned line drawings, the book comprises a monumental narrative of the art and architecture that gave form, direction, and meaning to much of Western culture.

Preaching Power

This book uses a gender perspective to examine sermons and other officially endorsed discourses of the Catholic Church in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Mexico City. Analyzing the different ways that, over time, gendered images, metaphors, and hagiographical examples were used in sermons and other documents, the book examines how the church negotiated challenges to its cultural and ideological hegemony. Beginning with sermons from the early eighteenth century, the author follows the evolution of church discourses as preachers reveled in Baroque analogies, embraced ideals of the Enlightenment, targeted women's alleged moral vices at times of political crisis, and ultimately turned to notions of women as "the devout sex" in order to combat incipient liberalism. Put another way, liberals after independence were not the only ones to assert a kind of "republican motherhood": preachers countered with a vision of "Catholic motherhood" that had great resonance in Mexico even into the twentieth century.

As an Irish Catholic, I extend an invitation to all who are open to reading this book: to share the humanness and joy I have witnessed in my life. My stories are intended to give a unique perspective of the times in which Ive lived. There are many other events in my seventy-five years that I could have chosen to write on, but Im hopeful that those Ive selected portray the times, the grandeur and beauty of my faith, and the comfort and sincerity that it affords. Im hopeful also that I will always be able to recognize the doves and the demons in my life and that all others can do the same.

Senses, Cognition, and Ritual Experience in the Roman World

How do the senses shape the way we perceive, understand, and remember ritual experiences? This book applies cognitive and sensory approaches to Roman rituals, reconnecting readers with religious experiences as members of an embodied audience. These approaches allow us to move beyond the literate elites to examine broader audiences of diverse individuals, who experienced rituals as participants and/or performers. Case studies of ritual experiences from a variety of places, spaces, and contexts across the Roman world, including polytheistic and Christian rituals, state rituals, private rituals, performances, and processions, demonstrate the dynamic and broad-scale application that cognitive approaches offer for ancient religion, paving the way for future interdisciplinary engagement. Stewards of the Market

A fast-paced, behind-closed-doors account of the Federal Reserve’s decision making during the 2008 financial crisis, showing how Fed policymakers overcame their own assumptions to contain the disaster. The financial crisis of 2008 led to the collapse of several major banks and thrust the US economy into the deepest recession since the Great Depression. The Federal Reserve was the agency most responsible for maintaining the nation’s economic stability. And the Fed’s Open Market Committee was a twelve-member body at the epicenter, making sense of the unfolding crisis and fashioning a response. This is the story of how they failed, learned, and staved off catastrophe. Drawing on verbatim ...

Transparency, Expectations, and Forecasts

A central bank¿s transparency about its objectives, economic outlook, & policy changes may affect the public¿s views about future economic & financial conditions. In keeping with this theory, since 1994 the Fed. Open Market Comm. has gradually increased the transparency of its statements accompanying changes in the fed. funds rate target. This article investigates whether private agents¿ ability to predict the economy¿s direction has improved since 1994. The analysis focuses on forecasts of macroecon. variables such as inflation, gross domestic product growth, & unemployment & policy variables such as short-term interest rates.
