Listen to the New Books Network Podcast! The phrase, “state of nature”, has been used over centuries to describe the uncultivated state of lands and animals, nudity, innocence, heaven and hell, interstate relations, and the locus of pre- and supra-political rights, such as the right to resistance, to property, to create and leave polities, and the freedom of religion, speech, and opinion, which may be reactivated or reprioritised when the polity and its laws fail. Combining intellectual history with current concerns, this volume brings together fourteen essays on the past, present and possible future applications of the legal fiction known as the state of nature. Contributors are: Daniel S. Allemann, Pamela Edwards, Ioannis D. Evrigenis, Mary C. Fuller, David Singh Grewal, Francesca Iurlaro, Edward J. Kolla, László Kontler, Grant S. McCall, Emile Simpson,Tom Sparks, Benjamin Straumann, Karl Widerquist, Sarah Winter, and Simone Zurbuchen.

The adage that an army “marches on its stomach” finds renewed emphasis in this collection of essays. Focusing on military diet and supply from Homer through the Roman Empire, Diet and Logistics in Greek and Roman Warfare explains regional dietary options and reassesses traditional notions of “provisioning” while exploring topics ranging from strategy and subterfuge to trade and terror. Through fresh insights drawn from current research and excavation spanning the Greco-Roman world, contributors confirm how providing food and drink for soldiers was critical to every army’s success and survival. This volume stimulates reevaluation of ancient militaries and encourages new research.

This trilingual volume focuses on acts of transgressive acting/writing in selected texts of European literatures whose authors differ in gender, nationality and time frame. Thus, the contributions collected here consider a double questioning: of difference and transgression of norms. Both concepts are set in relation to each other in order to be able to embed any transition in cultural-social-historical contexts. The analyses and interpretations of selected texts from German, French, Polish, Russian and ancient literature, presented in chronological order, show exemplary acts of transgression in different cultures and under changing time circumstances and document aesthetic attempts to revise the existing order and create a new one.

Literature and its interactions with other disciplines such as history, philosophy, anthropology, the visual and multimedia arts, social sciences, medicine, technologies, are at the core of many potential and multifaceted investigations, originating within literary discourse itself. Through these multifarious multidisciplinary approaches, literature can be seen as a complex and dynamic system, in which issues of cross-cultural contact can be tackled from different theoretical and methodological points of view. This volume focuses on the philosophical and scientific debate on cultural contact by investigating the critical implications of these dynamics through multidisciplinary perspectives to literary studies, and bridging the gap between apparently divergent approaches.

What are the challenges and needs of society that schools face? This publication focuses on the transformation of the school towards a learning organization in the society. The authors present the model of school transformation, supporting it with the theory of transformational leadership and a description of contemporary school functions in the individual and social dimensions. The main reflection is grounded in the assumption that an institution where the interactions between the present and the image of the future are particularly visible is school-essentially focused on the anticipation of emerging civilization trends and new opportunities. Modern schools are particularly expected to promote functions related to the preparation for active life, involved in creating the world in changing conditions and functions related to the universalization of life patterns while maintaining the identity and subjectivity of groups and individuals.
