This book is a meditation or reflection on the role of the Dominican in the modern world. But as Master of the Order of Preachers Bruno Cadore points out at the start of the book, we are all brothers and sisters, and therefore this book is addressed to a wide audience. Having traveled to visit the houses of the order in every part of the world, Cadore is aware of the suffering and persecution not just of Christians but of human beings. Many members of his own order (like the Bishop of Algiers) have been murdered. His outreach is to the poor, the marginalized and the afflicted. His Dominican vision is in this sense totally consonant with the Papacy of Pope Francis.
Clinical Bioethics
A theory of Clinical Bioethics based on the integration of the moral logic of health care practice ("internal morality") and the larger social concerns and processes ("external morality") Clinical Bioethics. A Search for the Foundations compares major theoretical models in the foundation of clinical bioethics and explains medicine as a normative practice. The goals of medicine are discussed with particular reference to the subjectivisation of health and the rationalisation of health care institutions. Mathias Goeritz
The first major work in English on Mathias Goeritz (1915-1990), this book illuminates the artist's pivotal role within the landscape of twentieth-century modernism. Goeritz became recognized as an abstract sculptor after arriving in Mexico from Germany by way of Spain in 1949. His call to integrate abstract forms into civic and religious architecture, outlined in his "Emotional Architecture" manifesto, had a transformative impact on midcentury Mexican art and design. Ratio Formationis Generalis and Ratio Studiorum Generalis
In 2016 the Dominicans, the Order of Preachers, celebrated the 8th centenary of its confirmation by Pope Honorius III. Seeking to renew its life and mission, the Order undertook a complete revision of two of its most important legislative documents, the general plan for the formation of new members of the Order (Ratio Formationis Generalis) and the general plan for philosophical and theological study undertaken by members of the Order and followed in its institutions (Ratio Studiorum Generalis). These documents are made available here, in English, Spanish and French, to facilitate access to them by Dominicans and by others interested in religious life and formation. The Dominican Approaches in Education
With eleven new contributions, this second edition of essays on the sources and principles of Dominican values in education offers an extended sample of the many settings in which Dominican education, broadly understood, finds expression. Cherished by all Dominicans, these values are exemplified not only in the lives of well-known foundational Dominicans, but also in some of those many others who, on every continent and across time, have responded in typically Dominican ways at key moments in history. Educators, activists, philosophers, teachers, preachers, artists, healers and theologians at many levels share their analyses and reflections on educating in many different contexts, explicitly and implicitly demonstrating ideals and values common to the goals of Dominican education everywhere. Dominicans and Human Rights
To mark the long history of Dominican involvement in defence of human rights, in the year celebrating the 800th anniversary of the confirmation of the Order of Preachers, two hundred Dominican brothers, sisters and laity met in Salamanca, Spain, to discuss the contribution of the Dominican Order, in the past, present and future, in the promotion and defence of human rights. It was in that city in the sixteenth century that, prompted by his Dominican brothers, such as Bartolome de las Casas, who were defending the indigenous people of Latin America against the Spanish conquistadores, Francisco de Vitoria planted the seed of today's international human rights movement. This volume presents in original languages the eleven papers given in Salamanca as well as the statement adopted by the delegates at the end of the meeting. They combine historical views, theoretical insights and testimonies from life experience. This offers a rich contribution, not only towards strengthening the role of the Dominican Family, and even the universal church, in defending human rights, but also towards a deeper understanding of 'evangelisation' and 'mission'.
