They Call Me Goose

When Jack "Goose" Givens first walked onto the basketball court at Lexington's Douglass Park for the legendary Dirt Bowl league, it was the beginning of one of the most illustrious sports careers in Kentucky history. After being named 1974's Mr. Basketball for the state of Kentucky as a high school senior, Givens signed with the University of Kentucky and went on to amass a string of achievements that place him among the all-time greats in NCAA college basketball—most notably leading UK to the 1978 NCAA Men's National Championship with his 41-point performance against the Duke Blue Devils in that historic game—and being named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player for that year. They Cal...

Appalachia and Beyond

In Appalachia and Beyond:Yarns and Yearnings in Prose and Poetry, Stanley Barlow entertains us with some stories and sketches--many of them from Appalachia as he experienced it growing up. He engages us in some thinking about education, religion, and personal identity. Here too are some poems--new and selected. The yarns and sketches are for the most part true. Some come from my humorist years, writes the author. The play, Mostly Anecdotal, I hope reads like a short story: it centers on a colorful professor in Oregon, and at the same time, it argues the importance of career counseling in our schools and colleges. Much of the narrative in the book reflects my years as an educator in Tennessee...

Diseases and Pathogens of Eucalypts

Over the last fifty years, there has been an increasing recognition that eucalypts are vulnerable to a wide range of diseases. They have suffered destructive epidemics, particularly of dieback caused by the cinnamon fungus in native forests, of foliar diseases and cankers in plantations, and of dieback of remnant trees on agricultural and grazing land. This has stimulated intensive research into the causes and management of diseases of the eucalypts. This work represents a comprehensive review of our current knowledge of the health and diseases of eucalypts.

Doowop

The Chicago Tribune's Bill Dahl praised Robert Pruter's Doowop for "vividly describ ing] an enchanting time on the local music scene, when a handful of teenagers could taste rock 'n' roll stardom with harmonies they cooked up on a street corner." Pruter foraged sources from fanzines to the Chicago Defender and conducted extensive interviews in cooking up Doowop, which chronicles the careers of such legendary 1950s groups as the Flamingos, the Moonglows, the Spaniels, and the El Dorados, along with virtually every other Chicago doowop group that contributed to that era.
