The most critical state of a structure's lifetime is during construction; many more disasters occur during construction than after projects have been completed. This book helps readers to determine construction loads; understand performance criteria during construction; prevent construction delays; maintain structural strength and stability; find relevant codes and standards; learn methods of shoring, reshoring, bracing and guying, and completing other temporary work; spot potential hazards; eliminate construction-created structural disaster; and maximize site safety. The book also covers concrete frame analysis and provides comprehensive treatment of topics such as construction procedures a...

Design Of Modern Highrise Reinforced Concrete Structures

This book presents the results of a Japanese national research project carried out in 1988-1993, usually referred to as the New RC Project. Developing advanced reinforced concrete building structures with high strength and high quality materials under its auspices, the project aimed at promoting construction of highrise reinforced concrete buildings in highly seismic areas such as Japan. The project covered all the aspects of reinforced concrete structures, namely materials, structural elements, structural design, construction, and feasibility studies. In addition to presenting these results, the book includes two chapters giving an elementary explanation of modern analytical techniques, i.e. finite element analysis and earthquake response analysis.

Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings for Seismic Performance

The costs of inadequate earthquake engineering are huge, especially for reinforced concrete buildings. This book presents the principles of earthquake-resistant structural engineering, and uses the latest tools and techniques to give practical design guidance to address single or multiple seismic performance levels. It presents an elegant, simple and theoretically coherent design framework. Required strength is determined on the basis of an estimated yield displacement and desired limits of system ductility and drift demands. A simple deterministic approach is presented along with its elaboration into a probabilistic treatment that allows for design to limit annual probabilities of failure. The design method allows the seismic force resisting system to be designed on the basis of elastic analysis results, while nonlinear analysis is used for performance verification. Detailing requirements of ACI 318 and Eurocode 8 are presented. Students will benefit from the coverage of seismology, structural dynamics, reinforced concrete, and capacity design approaches, which allows the book to be used as a foundation text in earthquake engineering.

Reinforced concrete is the go-to powerhouse of modern construction: no other load-bearing building material is as malleable with similarly good noise and fire protection properties. The book illustrates this versatility with around 20 building examples and specialist articles from the fields of structural and civil engineering. In-depth project descriptions and numerous detailed drawings show the design and construction process of these halls, bridges, railway stations, and office buildings. Articles informed by research and practice also portray a building material in transformation. Still, the reinforced concrete buildings of earlier decades also constitute a legacy, and their restoration and maintenance continue to fascinate us to this day. The book also takes a critical look at the handling of this building material.

Examining the proliferation of reinforced-concrete construction in the United States after 1900, historian Amy E. Slaton considers how scientific approaches and occupations displaced traditionally skilled labor. The technology of concrete buildings—little studied by historians of engineering, architecture, or industry—offers a remarkable case study in the modernization of American production. The use of concrete brought to construction the new procedures and priorities of mass production. These included a comprehensive application of science to commercial enterprise and vast redistributions of skills, opportunities, credit, and risk in the workplace. Reinforced concrete also changed the ...
