Lakewood Theatre
Beginning as a humble vaudeville hall in the Skowhegan-Madison trolley park, Lakewood Theatre has graced the southwestern shore of Lake Wesserunsett in Madison, Maine, since the turn of the 20th century. Under the masterful guidance of Herbert L. Swett, a Bangor native and Bowdoin graduate, Lakewood eventually developed into a nationally renowned playhouse that was called the "Broadway in Maine" by the New York Times in its heyday, from 1925 until World War II. In the years following the war, Lakewood was operated by Swett's heirs and became a virtual who's who of both Broadway and Hollywood, until it nearly went dark in the early 1980s. Operating today as a nonprofit community theater, Lakewood is the official state theater of Maine and the oldest continually running summer theater in the country.
J. W. Buckalew
J. W. Buckalew was raised in a Christian home, taken to church and taught scripture. On a dead-end dirt road, God called him to preach. Yet, he pursued another way of life; one that included drinking (maybe moonshine), gambling, and brawling. From the hog pen of sin, he was saved, sanctified, and baptized in the Holy Ghost. From meals consisting of cheese and crackers, to spending nights under the stars, to imprisonment, and destruction of his meager possessions, he persevered on his evangelistic journey, for the Church of God, without complaint.
David Elliott, Loyalist, and His Descendants
Chiefly a record of some of the descendants of David Elliott. He was born ca. 1745 and died before June 1812 in Ontario, Canada. He married Sarah ca. 1770. She was born ca 1753 and died 21 Apr 1824 in Elizabethtown, Ontario. They were the parents of six known children.
