A History of the First Christians
This work provides a survey of the history of the earliest Christian church in the period up to the fall of Jerusalem. It concentrates on: the figure of Paul; judicious and critical use of information in the Book of Acts; Judaizing versions of Christianity; and the Johannine tradition. The approach steers a middle way between an over-simplified account which fails to warn students where scholarly opinion is divided, and an in-depth academic study which attempts to document and discuss every hypothesis. Wedderburn focuses on aspects of central importance: the changing shape of church life and developing Christianity in relation to the Roman Empire and to Judaism. This book seeks to draw together and make more readily accessible many new insights gained from an enormous range of recent scholarly studies in German and English, and places them in the context of a more general account.
Reading the Gospel of Mark in the Twenty-first Century
Markan scholars have noticed a proliferation of approaches to the study of the First Gospel, thus demanding a new assessment of the current research. Simple enumeration, however, is not enough. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, there has been an increasing need to examine each method's added value to the better understanding of Mark's Gospel. In this volume, forty-two researchers reflect on the success of the various approaches. The book can be read as a dialogue between scholars. It integrates their reflections on methodology, specific passages, and particular topics of the Gospel. It also combines important aspects of the Gospel's history, narratology, reception, inter-textuality, composition, and theology with themes such as the messianic secret, the Kingdom of God, the disciple's role, the passion, the resurrection, and its open ending. After almost two millennia, Mark's enigmatic story about Jesus has generated more interest than ever before. The volume contains the proceedings of the Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense held at Leuven in July 2017.
Mark's Jesus
Noted biblical scholar Elizabeth Struthers Malbon asks a literary question in this landmark volume: how does the Markan narrative characterise Jesus? Prophetic Conflicts in the Deuteronomistic History
This study explores the four narratives regarding prophetic conflicts in the Deuteronomistic History via three steps: first, examining the narratives with a synchronic approach; second, discussing the date of the narratives as revised by the Deuteronomists in the Persian period; last, considering religious settings and rhetorical purposes of the narratives. The Deuteronomists were more interested in the theological questions of the "true Israel," "true YHWH," and the "true worship place" than the prophetic conflicts. The conflicts reflect the difficulty to distinguish between true and false prophecy, and the Deuteronomists sought to answer their questions by using the conflict narratives. Their answers aimed for the postexilic community to protect their ethnic identity and to worship YHWH alone, exclusively in Jerusalem.
Exodus 1-15
This commentary interprets the first part of the book of Exodus, through 15:21. It features two approaches. On the one hand, the commentary interprets the final form of the traditional Hebrew text "synchronically" by means of form criticism and modern literary methods. On the other hand, it "diachronically" reconstructs the predecessors of the final form, from its origins in an exodus composition that opposes political domination to the text's final form as a dramatic narrative about the transfer of sovereignty from the Pharaoh to the God of Israel. Concluding syntheses examine the relationship between these two interpretive approaches while adding reflections on traditional and contemporary concerns.
The Book of Samuel and Its Response to Monarchy
Power comprises one of the key topics of the book of Samuel. This theme encompasses tribal contentions, power differentials between religious authorities and kings, fathers and sons, men and women. The articles assembled here explore Israel's search for political identity and Samuel's critique of monarchy, the book's constructions of power and powerlessness, and the editors' and early audiences' postmonarchic reflections. Historical and social-scientific approaches to the book of Samuel find ancient Near Eastern parallels for the political organization of Israel and describe the social conditions under authoritarian regimes. Redactional approaches examine the diachronic development of Samuel's varying perceptions of monarchy, from that institution's inception through its entrenchment in Israelite and Judahite society, until it underwent a sudden, cataclysmic failure. And literary and theological approaches advocate for contemporary reconsideration and application of the book's more noble principles.

In der Antike finden sich kulturübergreifend sowohl im jüdischen als auch im griechisch-römischen Bereich seit dem 6. Jh. v. Chr. Erzählungen, die davon handeln, wie Gottesmänner, Mantiker oder Ärzte jung Verstorbene kurz nach ihrem Tod wiederbeleben. Die ins Neue Testament eingegangenen Totenerweckungserzählungen von Jesus, Petrus und Paulus können somit einer Gattung zugeordnet werden, die zur Zeit des entstehenden Christentums bereits etabliert ist. Der vorliegende Band enthält philologische, traditionsgeschichtliche und (kognitions-)narratologische Analysen dieser Texte, wobei ein besonderer Schwerpunkt auf den "paganen" Gattungsexemplaren liegt. Somit wird deutlich, welche Spezifika die frühchristlichen Totenerweckungserzählungen insbesondere auch in theologischer Hinsicht aufweisen.
