Medieval Cologne
In Anglophone literature, historical questions about urban, socio-economic, political, religious, and cultural development have often been answered using Anglo-French, Anglo-Low Countries, and Anglo-Italian paradigms and sources. Medieval Germany has been largely overlooked, seen as a peripheral and irrelevant anomaly. Conversely, scholars from the German Rhineland have mostly remained within the traditions of civic public history and Landesgeschichte. As a result, they rarely engage with the historical questions raised in wider European discourses. This volume challenges these historiographical propensities by offering a fresh perspective on medieval urban Germany. It aims to integrate Cologne and the Rhineland more accurately and equitably into the wider histories of medieval Europe. The book engages with historical questions of wider relevance across both German and European medieval histories. It invites all scholars and students of medieval Europe to utilize Cologne as a key source for their research and writing.

Images of Change
Images of Change focuses on the visual propaganda employed by Catholic popes in Rome during the time of Tridentine Reform. In 1563, at the Council of Trent, the Catholic Church decided to reform its own use of imagery, in response to Protestant criticism. This volume examines how different sixteenth-century popes dealt with church reform by looking at the variety of artworks that were commissioned particularly in the city of Rome, the immediate sphere of influence of papal power. Based on original research in the Vatican archives, the book argues that because of the contradictory media strategies employed by individual popes, the papacy began to lose its spiritual and temporal influence and power. Der 1937 geborene Dieter Herion hatte neben seiner Sparkassentätigkeit sein Betriebswirtschaftsstudium an der VWA Köln erfolgreich abgeschlossen, sich aber schon früh - wie er sagt: "schon immer" - für Geschichte interessiert. Obwohl er im Laufe seines Berufslebens als Bankkaufmann in der Betriebshierarchie einer großen deutschen Bank bis auf die Ebene des "niederen Adels" aufstieg, holte ihn eines Tages seine alte Liebe zur Geschichte wieder ein. Er studierte einige Semester an der Kölner Volkshochschule und an der Kölner Universität und "praktiziert" nun seit 25 bzw. 20 Jahren Geschichte in Form von Stadtführungen durch Köln bzw. Führungen und Vorträgen im Kölnischen Stadtmuseum. Und das verstärkt nach dem Ende seines Berufslebens. Dies ist die erste Veröffentlichung aus seiner Vortragstätigkeit.

Erstmals liegt mit diesem Buch ein Einblick in ein historisches Gebäude vor, dessen Originaleinrichtung nahezu vollständig erhalten ist. Von der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts bis in die Gegenwart werden die Geschichte und der Funktionswandel eines ehemals kaiserlichen Jagdhauses nachgezeichnet. Ausführlich werden die politische Geschichte, die Baugeschichte und das Interieur anhand von zahlreichen historischen Quellen wie Akten, Pläne, Fotografien und persönlichen Erinnerungen der Bewohner und ihrer Gäste beleuchtet. Mit überraschenden Details kann der Leser so eine spannende Zeitreise von der Monarchie bis in die Zweite Republik unternehmen.
