Materials Research with Ion Beams
Due to new technological progress in the development of ion sources and accelerators interesting kinds of beams are now available. They open new fields for materials research with ion beams. The present status and future possibilities of these research activities are described by experts on this field in the form of review articles. The papers presented in the book focus on very different aspects ranging from the field of truly appliedresearch to the field of fundamental atomic research investigating interaction mechanisms of slow, highly charged particles with surfaces. The book is intended to provide a source of information about recent developments in basic research for the physicists about the status ofthe input of their work into applied materials science. In addition, also other well established techniques, such as Rutherford backscattering analysis and their use in materials research such as of HTC are described. Relativistic Channeling
Channeling, by its nature, involves a wide and disparate range of disciplines. Crystal preparation, material science, accelerator physics, sophisticated theoretical analysis and, of course, channeling itself all must work in concert in a research program. "Perhaps the most controversial aspect of this volume is the number (V) assigned to the conference in this series. Actually, the first conference to be held under the title "Atomic Collisions in Solids" was held at Sussex University in England in 1969 and the second at Gausdal, Norway in 1971, which would logically make the conference held at Gatlinburg, Tennessee, U.S.A. in 1973 the third (III). However, the appearance of the proceedings of the 1971 Gausdal Conference (published by Gordon and Breach) bore the number IV. The reasoning behind this was that, in. fact, two previous conferences had been largely dedicated to the same subject area.
