Emerging Technologies for Nutrition Research

The latest of a series of publications based on workshops sponsored by the Committee on Military Nutrition Research, this book's focus on emerging technologies for nutrition research arose from a concern among scientists at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine that traditional nutrition research, using standard techniques, centered more on complex issues of the maintenance or enhancement of performance, and might not be sufficiently substantive either to measure changes in performance or to predict the effects on performance of stresses soldiers commonly experience in operational environments. The committee's task was to identify and evaluate new technologies to determi...

Thiamine: Catalytic Mechanisms in Normal and Disease States brings together the most recent developments in thiamine diphosphate (TDP)-requiring enzyme research and details the mechanisms of catalysis and structure-function relationships, as well as pathophysiological aspects of a spectrum of diseases associated with TDP-requiring enzymes. Providing new insights into neurogenerative diseases, this volume associates defects in the function of TDP-dependent enzymes with numerous metabolic disorders and disease states and offers novel aspects of thiamine enzymes in chiral synthesis as well as new perspectives on the cellular role of thiamine triphosphate and thiamine triphosphates.

12 Strokes

This comprehensive, case-based resource provides the state-of-the-art knowledge that can help readers improve access and optimize delivery of stroke thrombectomy. Improving access to stroke is of particular importance because patients often misinterpret their symptoms or cannot speak for themselves if they have aphasia. More importantly, access needs to be organized because stroke therapies are all extremely time-sensitive. Scalable, choreographed protocols are necessary for emergency medical systems to ‘capture’ stroke patients and automatically transport and triage to time-sensitive treatments. Many of the chapters in the first section on Fundamentals and Systems provide valuable insig...

Interleukin 12: Antitumor Activity and Immunotherapeutic Potential in Oncology

This book discusses the immunotherapeutic potential of Interleukin 12 in the context of clinical oncology, as well as antitumor effects confirmed in preclinical studies and clinical trials in cancer immunotherapy. Due to its ability to activate both innate (NK cells) and adaptive (cytotoxic T lymphocytes) immunities, Interleukin 12 (IL-12) has been regarded as a promising candidate for tumor immunotherapy. However, despite the encouraging results in animal models, only very modest antitumor effects have been confirmed in early clinical trials. Recently, several clinical studies have been initiated in which IL-12 was applied as an adjuvant in cancer vaccines, in gene therapy including locoregional injections of IL-12 plasmid, and in the form of tumor-targeting immunocytokines (IL-12 fused to monoclonal antibodies).

Cellular, Molecular and Environmental Contribution in Cardiac Remodeling: From Lab Bench to Clinical Perspective consolidates the most recent research advances on cellular, molecular, biochemical, and heterogeneous factors contributing to the physiological and pathological cardiac remodeling, elucidating their mechanisms of action and the clinical outcomes of cardiac remodeling. It extensively covers the factors determining cardiac remodeling, including cardiomyocyte regeneration, cardiac stem cells and their therapeutic potential, cardiac resident pericytes, the role of natural bioactive compounds in cardiac remodeling, chronic cardiac adaptations to exercise and more. This book provides ba...
