Sightlines

  • Categories: Art

Sightlines is an architectural term meaning what you can see from where you stand - it's a question of perspective. This collection of images and words, gathered in conjunction with the international Sightlines symposium in Edmonton, Canada, in 1997, reveals the printmaker and the print from many angles. Including more than 250 color images representing more than 120 artists and a text by more than a dozen contributors, Sightlines opens up a rare view of contemporary printmaking around the world.

While students and general readers typically cannot relate to esoteric definitions of science fiction, they readily understand the genre as a literature that characteristically deals with subjects such as new inventions, space, robot and aliens. This book looks at science fiction in precisely this manner, with twenty-one chapters that each deal with a subject that is repeatedly addressed in science fiction of recent centuries. Based on a packet of original essays that the author assembled for his classes, the book could serve as a supplemental textbook in science fiction classes, but also contains material of interest to science fiction scholars and others devoted to the genre. In some cases...

William Gibson

The leading figure in the development of cyberpunk, William Gibson (born in 1948) crafted works in which isolated humans explored near-future worlds of ubiquitous and intrusive computer technology and cybernetics. This volume is the first comprehensive examination of the award-winning author of the seminal novel Neuromancer (and the other books in the Sprawl trilogy, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive), as well as other acclaimed novels including recent bestsellers Pattern Recognition, Spook Country, and Zero History. Renowned scholar Gary Westfahl draws upon extensive research to provide a compelling account of Gibson's writing career and his lasting influence in the science fiction world. ...

Archaeological digs have turned up sculptures in Inuit lands that are thousands of years old, but "Inuit art" as it is known today only dates back to the beginning of the 1900s. Early art was traditionally produced from soft materials such as whalebone, and tools and objects were also fashioned out of stone, bone, and ivory because these materials were readily available. The Inuit people are known not just for their sculpture but for their graphic art as well, the most prominent forms being lithographs and stonecuts. This work affords easy access to information to those interested in any type of Inuit art. There are annotated entries on over 3,761 articles, books, catalogues, government documents, and other publications.

This exhibition brings together the work of twelve artists from the United States and Canada who undermine the decorative and comfortable domesticity usually associated with crafts. Though crafts have too often been considered the stepchildren of the more intellectual and elevated “Fine Arts”, these subversive crafts people acknowledge the realm of the familiar and homey everyday object as a powerful milieu to provide an intimate, experiential and incisive commentary on the emotive conditions of contemporary life. Artists: Laura Baird, Kate Boyan, Lou Cabeen, Nancy Edell, John Garret, Anne Kraus, Keith Lewis, Paul Mathieu, Matt Nolen, Richard Notkin, Leslie Sampson, Jane Sauer, Joyce Scott, Barbara Todd, and Lillian Tyrell.

A History of Video Art is a revised and expanded edition of the 2006 original, which extends the scope of the first edition, incorporating a wider range of artists and works from across the globe and explores and examines developments in the genre of artists' video from the mid 1990s up to the present day. In addition, the new edition expands and updates the discussion of theoretical concepts and ideas which underpin contemporary artists' video. Tracking the changing forms of video art in relation to the revolution in electronic and digital imaging that has taken place during the last 50 years, A History of Video Art orients video art in the wider art historical context, with particular reference to the shift from the structuralism of the late 1960s and early 1970s to the post-modernist concerns of the 1980s and early 1990s. The new edition also explores the implications of the internationalisation of artists' video in the period leading up to the new millennium and its concerns and preoccupations including post-colonialism, the post-medium condition and the impact and influence of the internet.
