Merriam Press Medical Science. Since the early 1970s, Pueblo has become an academic medical center. Supported by its two hospitals, Pueblo is the only Colorado city, outside of the Denver metro area, that has two major medical residency programs. St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center has a Family Medicine residency program that trains 20 physicians each year and Parkview Medical Center has an Internal Medicine residency program that trains 30 physicians each year. Parkview Medical Center also has a Critical Care Medicine fellowship program that trains six physicians each year. The early 1970s was an exciting time in medicine and especially critical care medicine in southern Colorado. Bartecchi's goal in this review is to cover the early development of critical care medicine during the early 1970s, and for a number of years after, while he was still active in the care of critically ill patients. 27 photos/illustrations.

"Humanitarian aid programs are a partnership...a knowledgeable, capable donor and an organized, enlightened receiver. Programs maximizing those qualities have a good chance of succeeding, while others will waste the time, talent and treasures of the donor, and further frustrate the hope and ambitions of the receivers. In this combined edition, Dr. Bartecchi and his co-workers outline a program that has worked and provides suggestions that could help others to develop suggestions that could help others develop a successful program" -- Back cover.

The Alternative Medicine Hoax

In this important book, the author takes us on a systematic voyage through the complex world of alternative medicine. He describes the details of many popular hoaxes and frauds connected to the uses of popular and recommended products, such as Echinacea, ginko biloba, glucosamine and more. Dr Bartecchi makes an obvious point: If the product could be proven or confirmed through clinical trials to show that it truly worked, nobody would apply the word 'alternative' to it. This book may change the lives of many people already taking alternative medicines and it may inspire others to research the products they are taking or considering.

Merriam Press Military Monograph 97. Second Edition (February 2012). It is a well established fact that there is a relationship between how well soldiers are cared for and how well they fight. That fact may explain why the American soldier is the best fighter in the world. Thanks to men and women like Dr. Bartecchi our troops in Vietnam were cared for as in no other war. Your chances of survival were greater if you were wounded on a battlefield in Vietnam than if you were in a crash on an American highway. But that care went beyond the GI. Vietnam may be the only war we ever fought, or perhaps that was ever fought, in which the American soldier added to their heroism a humanitarianism unmatc...

The U.S. population is aging. Social Security projections suggest that between 2013 and 2050, the population aged 65 and over will almost double, from 45 million to 86 million. One key driver of population aging is ongoing increases in life expectancy. Average U.S. life expectancy was 67 years for males and 73 years for females five decades ago; the averages are now 76 and 81, respectively. It has long been the case that better-educated, higher-income people enjoy longer life expectancies than less-educated, lower-income people. The causes include early life conditions, behavioral factors (such as nutrition, exercise, and smoking behaviors), stress, and access to health care services, all of...
