What is the difference between good worship and good entertainment? Too often, people disparage some aspect of worship by calling it "just entertainment" or "just a performance." Others say that they do not need to go to church because they have profound spiritual or even religious experiences at concerts, plays, movies, or dances. How is worship different from these performing arts? How is art different from entertainment? This book looks at the history of the performing arts both in worship and as worship, with particular attention to the attitudes that shape our ideas about both worship and entertainment. Working definitions of words like "art," "excellence," "liturgy," and "play" help to illuminate what different people mean when they use them in conversations about Christian worship. In Birthing Salvation Anna Rebecca Solevåg explores the theme of childbearing in early Christian discourse. The book maps the importance of women’s childbearing in Greco-Roman culture and shows how childbearing discourse interfaces with salvation discourse in three early Christian texts: the Pastoral Epistles, the Acts of Andrew and the Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicitas. Issues of gender and class are explored through an intersectional analysis. In particular, the institution of slavery, and its implications for ideas about salvation in these texts are drawn out. Birthing Salvation offers fresh interpretations of these texts, including the peculiar statement in 1 Tim 2:15 that women “will be saved through childbearing.”
A deep strain of tribal politics is dividing societies around the globe. Organized religions are also coping with scandals, disappointments, and polarizing ideologies. The history of Christianity reveals that such frictions deeply wound the church. Fr. Richard S. Vosko recognizes that liturgical buildings are metaphorical expressions of the people of God. Die Analyse dieser unterschiedlichen Erfahrungen wird durch die Beschäftigung mit einer empirisch orientierten Liturgiewissenschaft und durch die Bearbeitung von Theorien des Ortes und des Raumes ermöglicht. Auf diese Weise gelingt es, eine Analyse der Rezeption der Reform des gottesdienstlichen Lebens der Norwegischen Kirche in einem bestimmten urbanen Setting mit übergeordneten, prinzipiellen Fragen der Kirchentheorie zu verbinden. Gerade die (entscheidend von den empirischen Analysen angeleitete) Reflexion und Neuformatierung des Begriffes der Ortseigenheit/Ver-Ortung, der in der Reform an zentraler Stelle steht, ermöglicht, Ortseigenheit/Ver-Ortung eben nicht nur auf den konkreten Kontext hin zu sehen und zu verstehen, sondern vielmehr Verortung als theoretische Herausforderung für das Begreifen von Gottesdienst und Kirche überhaupt zu fassen.
