Columbus

Columbus has long been known for its musicians. Unlike New York, San Francisco, Kansas City, Nashville, or even Cincinnati, however, it has never had a definable "scene." Still, some truly remarkable music has been made in this musical crossroads by the many outstanding musicians who have called it home. Since 1900, Columbus has grown from the 28th- to the 15th-largest city in the United States. During this period, it has developed into a musically vibrant community that has nurtured the talents of such artists as Elsie Janis, Ted Lewis, Nancy Wilson, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Dwight Yoakam, Bow Wow, and Rascal Flatts. But, in many instances, those who chose to remain at home were as good and, perhaps, even better.

As You Were

A powerful, enraging, tear-jerking reminder of how so few Americans have sacrificed so much during the so-called' war on terror'. the best kind of war book. - Alex Kershaw, author of The Bedford Boys and Escape from the Deep "Through the voices and experiences of five very diverse members of the Virginia National Guard, As You Were gives the great majority of Americans who have not been sent to war a sense of the experiences of our citizen-soldiers and the family, employment, and health problems they face reentering American society after experiencing combat." - David R. Segal, Drector, Center for Research on Military Organization, University of Maryland "A sad, stirring, sometimes maddening story. Christian Davenport writes not so much about combat, but rather the home front--the struggles of the families left behind while their providers go off to war and of the solders themselves as they stagger back to a civilian world that declines to reward, or even betrays, their sacrifice." - Fred Kaplan, "War Stories" columist, Slate; author of Daydream Believers: How a Few Grand Ideas Wrecked American Power

Who becomes a hero? Where does their story really start--the beginning or the end? Is the past unchangeable? Has the future already happened? Is Time a constant or, like Albert Einstein said, all relative, with past, present and future coexisting? In the midst of the Vietnam war, five unlikely friends join forces to answer those questions and unmask a traitor--the Brasshole responsible for orchestrating two suicide missions, hundreds dead. A legend joined to a story, meant to guide the friends, was sent from the past into the future and back again, but remained an unsolved puzzle for generations. Only by working together, utilizing bits of information they each possess, can the friends decipher the ancient tale and discover that their friendship was not random, nor have they each simply been lucky in war. Time has manipulated their lives, aided and protected them, marking one for travel to the past, so that, that which is meant to be can be preserved. Time's goal? For them to arrive at a future they are promised has already happened. What bits of the past will ultimately remain and what will have been the cost of preserving it? Only a hero knows.
