The Cappadocian Mothers

The Cappadocian Mothers

The Cappadocian Fathers had great influence on the church of the fourth century, having brought their passion for Christ and theological expertise to life in their ministry. Their work was not devoid of influence, including that of their immediate family members. Within their writings we uncover the lives of seven women, the Cappadocian Mothers, who may have had more influence on the theology of the church than previously believed. As the Cappadocians wrestle with the Christianization of the concept of deification, we find the women in their lives becoming models for their theological understanding. The lives of the women become points of intersection in the kenosis-theosis parabola. Not only are the Cappadocian Mothers uncovered in the texts, but they become models of an optimistic theology of restoration for all of humanity without constraint of gender.

Many have heard of the Cappadocian Fathers-that trio from the fourth century who shaped much of the way we think about our faith today. What some don't realize is that these men were surrounded by several devout women who had a profound influence on their lives and their theology. Dr. Carla Sunberg has uncovered the fragments of details that remain about seven revolutionary women, whom she calls the Cappadocian Mothers. In so doing, Sun berg introduces to us a group of saints who practiced some very Uncommon Virtues. You'll be challenged and inspired by the stories of these incredible and courageous women who model a new way of following Christ. Book jacket.

Prayer is not simply another item for Christians to check off our daily to-do lists. If we are serious about the Christian life and about participating in God's mission in the world, then prayer will be an active and intentional part of our lives. In Teach Us to Pray, Carla Sunberg allows Scripture to be the guide, showing us where our ancestors and heroes in the faith--including Jesus himself but also Paul, the psalmists, and others--have already walked these paths and demonstrated for us how to achieve and enjoy a deep relationship with God through prayer. Each chapter closes with actionable steps and suggestions for Christains who want to practice what they've learned but don't know where to start.

When people hear competing--even contradicting--descriptions of holiness they sometimes become doubtful it can be a reality in their own lives. Like most divine things, holiness is difficult to describe and capture in one complete way.

The Spirit and the Screen

The Spirit and the Screen engages contemporary films from the perspective of pneumatology to give theologies of culture fruitful new perspectives that begin with the Spirit rather than other common theological contact points (Christology, anthropology, theological ethics, creation, eschatology, etc.). This book explores pertinent pneumatological issues that arise in film, as well as literary devices that draw allusions to the Spirit. It offers three main contributions: first, it explores how Christian understandings of the person and work of the Spirit illuminate the nature of film and film-making; second, it shows that there are in fact “Spirit figures” in film (as distinct from but ins...
