In the last years, it was observed an increasing interest of computer scientists in the structure of biological molecules and the way how they can be manipulated in vitro in order to define theoretical models of computation based on genetic engineering tools. Along the same lines, a parallel interest is growing regarding the process of evolution of living organisms. Much of the current data for genomes are expressed in the form of maps which are now becoming available and permit the study of the evolution of organisms at the scale of genome for the first time. On the other hand, there is an active trend nowadays throughout the field of computational biology toward abstracted, hierarchical views of biological sequences, which is very much in the spirit of computational linguistics. In the last decades, results and methods in the field of formal language theory that might be applied to the description of biological sequences were pointed out.
In the ?rst part of the present volume of LNCS, the reader will ?nd the invited talks given at the MCU 2001 conference. Automata theory is the foundation of computer science. Its applications have spread to almost all areas of computer science and many other disciplines. In addition, there is a growing number of software systems designed to manipulate automata, regular expressions, grammars, and related structures. This volume contains 24 regular papers from the 8th International Conference on Implementation and Application of Automata (CIAA 2003) held in Santa Barbara, CA, USA, in July 2003 covering various topics in the theory, implementation, and application of automata and related structures. It also includes the abstracts of two invited lectures as well as the abstracts of the poster papers displayed during the conference.
The theory of formal languages is one of the oldest branches of theoretical computer science. Its original aim (in the fifties and sixties) was to clarify the laws and algorithms that underlie the definition and compilation of programming languages. Since then, formal language theory has changed very much. Today it includes mathematical topics like combinatorics of words, word equations, and coding theory, but it also covers connections to linguistics (for example, the study of contextual grammars), new computational paradigms (like DNA computing), and a wide range of applications, among them hypertext processing, database theory, and formal program verification. Many of these themes of modern formal language theory are represented in this volume.
Advances in temporal databases make it increasingly easier to store time-dependent information, creating a need for facilities that will help end-users access this information. In the context of natural language interaction, significant effort has been devoted to interfaces that allow database queries to be formulated in natural language. Most of the existing interfaces, however, do not support adequately the notion of time.
