De-coding New Regionalism
Bringing together comparative case studies from Central Europe and South America, this book focuses on 'new' regions – regions created as political projects of modernization and 're-scaling'. Through this approach it de-codes 'New Regionalism' in terms of its contributions to institutional change, while acknowledging its contested nature and contradictions. It questions whether these regions are merely a strategy of neo-liberal adjustment to changing political and economic conditions, or whether they are indicative of true reform, greater citizen participation and empowerment. It assesses whether these regions are really representing something new or whether they are a reconfiguration of traditional power relationships. It provides a timely critical analysis of 'region-building' and the extent to which national processes of decentralization and sub-national processes of regionalism can enhance the effectiveness and responsiveness of governance.

Remembering African Labor Migration to the Second World
This open access book is about Mozambicans and Angolans who migrated in state-sponsored schemes to East Germany in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s. They went to work and to be trained as a vanguard labor force for the intended African industrial revolutions. While they were there, they contributed their labor power to the East German economy. This book draws on more than 260 life history interviews and uncovers complex and contradictory experiences and transnational encounters. What emerges is a series of dualities that exist side by side in the memories of the former migrants: the state and the individual, work and consumption, integration and exclusion, loss and gain, and the past in the past and the past in the present and future. By uncovering these dualities, the book explores the lives of African migrants moving between the Third and Second worlds. Devoted to the memories of worker-trainees, this transnational study comes at a time when historians are uncovering the many varied, complicated, and important connections within the global socialist world.

Jesuits and Asian Goods in the Iberian Empires, 1580–1700
This book analyzes the exchange relations between the colonies of the Iberian Empires, starting from two cities ports, Buenos Aires and Macau in the period 1580-1700. Agents, who were not professional traders such as the members of the Society of Jesus, and the circulation and consumption of Asian goods in the local populations of Buenos Aires and Macau, were analyzed. Both cases of study will show us how these non-state agents- the Jesuits- build their own networks and exchange channels to Chinese goods distribution (i.e silk, porcelain, musk, amber and others) between Asia and Latin American. This book intends to break with the local scheme of Jesuit studies in order to combine the local scale with analysis of inter-regional processes on a continental scale, from a comparative perspective.
Aproximación a los estudios globales: actores y estrategias
En este tomo de la edición conmemorativa del XXX aniversario del Departamento de Estudios Regionales – INESER se presenta una parte de los trabajos de investigación que se hacen al interior del Centro de Estudios Globales (CEG). Abordan cinco temáticas: la multiplicidad de actores (individuales, colectivos e institucionales) que toman parte en los procesos de globalización comercial y cómo éstos afectan a sus situaciones políticas, sociales y culturales; las relaciones multicéntricas de poder derivadas de la formación de grandes bloques económico-comerciales desde un enfoque macrosocial y geopolítico; el impacto de los procesos globales en las regulaciones impuestas por los Estados nacionales a la industria electrónica transnacional; y el panorama nacional de las empresas con actividades globales y cómo éstas han afectado la autonomía económica local. Los capítulos contenidos en este volumen invitan a un diálogo con el lector desde muy diversas visiones y teniendo en cuenta las contradicciones y ambigüedades que surgen al investigar problemáticas tan complejas y multidimensionales como la globalización.

El libro que el lector tiene en sus manos, consiste en una serie de notas que buscan exponer de manera sucinta las principales ideas y motivaciones intelectuales que respaldan esta muestra de ensayos. De tal forma que se abordan temas generales sobre las dimensiones de los dialogos regionales, cuyas particularidades son retomadas en las secciones del libro. Es importante mencionar que la materializacion parcial de esta empresa academica ha implicado seguir una agenda de investigacion de largo plazo y varios equipos de trabajo investigando de forma independiente pero coordinada. Estrategia que sirvio de base para organizar el simposio internacional titulado: EPS-4 "Dialogos regionales entre America Latina y Europa Central: Cambio institucional, Transformacion Sistemica y Adaptaciones Regionales a Finales del Siglo XX," en el marco del 51 Congreso Internacional de Americanistas celebrado del 14 al 18 de julio de 2003 en Santiago de Chile."
