First published in 2003. Europe: lives in transition gives a voice to people living through transition, opening a door for outsiders to understand how such people have lived - an opportunity for one to speak and another to listen. The book has been deliberately written in an accessible, engaging and first-hand manner. Original quotes from various projects are woven together throughout the text.This book focuses explicitly on the experiences of respondents and functions largely to introduce themes and speakers. The principal themes are: identities, relationships, production, consumption and power. Except for selected crucial theoretical and methodological discussions, any academic commentary, which might overshadow the words of the respondents, is kept to a minimum. A key aim is to engage the readers with the text by confronting them with their own preconceptions and geographical imaginations. Each chapter opens with two activity sections to help readers think about the themes in broader terms, for example, by doing some research themselves. Each chapter closes with two further activity sections for review and discussion.
Area Studies, Business and Culture
As the level of globalization in business relationships rises, the importance of questions and problems pertaining to intercultural communication increases more and more. This gives rise to new tasks for the social sciences, which can only be successfully performed through interdisciplinary cooperation in the sense of area-studies. Between 1995 and 2002 for area, the Bavarian research network for area-studies, drew together numerous members of the scientific community who are specialized in the social sciences to pursue previously unresearched topics in areas of overlap of business and culture as exemplified in non-European regions. The most important results are collated here.
Geographies of Asylum in Europe and the Role of European Localities
This open access book describes how the numerous arrivals of asylum seekers since 2015 shaped reception and integration processes in Europe. It addresses the structuration of asylum and reception systems, and spaces and places of reception on European, national, regional and local level. It also analyses perceptions and discourses on asylum and refugees, their evolvement and the consequences for policy development. Furthermore, it examines practices and policy developments in the field of refugee reception and integration. The volume shows and explains a variety of refugee reception and integration strategies and practices as specific outcome of multilevel governance processes in Europe. By addressing and contextualizing those multiple experiences of asylum seeker reception, the book is a valuable contribution to the literature on migration and integration, societal development and political culture in Europe.

This collection of fifteen methodological texts by a group of thirty international youth and social researchers is a polyphony of scholarly voices advancing the field of qualitative inquiry in youth studies. The book homes in on ways of adapting, remixing and reconsidering qualitative methods in order to better serve youth researchers in the twenty-first century. The texts included in this collection offer honest and open accounts of searching for, assembling, testing, and rejecting creative, well-known, or unconventional techniques from various methodical homes. As is emphasized in the title, this is not so much an overview as an inquiry into conducting youth research in an environment that is constantly transforming. Researchers are always seeking out the best ways to capture and (co)-produce meaning that can be used for the greater good. This book offers fresh interpretations of, and feedback on, inventive combinations of methods, research questions and theoretical frameworks. It will be of interest to all who work in youth studies and sociology, and particularly useful to postgraduate students, junior scholars, and established researchers seeking to branch out into new terrain.
Re-writing Spatiality
The objective of this project is to encourage new ways of thinking about the meaning and significance of space. It follows a desire that has been expressed and theorized by Henri Lefebvre - and by extension Edward W. Soja - to remove Spatiality from the margin of the "Trialectics of Being" and to bring it into the "Trialectics' fold" alongside with - and of at least equal significance to - Historicality and Sociality. The thesis focuses on how space of the Pilbara region in Western Australia is produced in contemporary Australian writing, film, art and through "lived experience". The thesis argues for an understanding of space as essentially dynamic.
In/Visibility of Flight
In/Visibility is unequally distributed in society and closely related to the distribution of power and privilege. Using images and narratives to mobilize is part of political strategies. The relationship of in/visibility and migration is the guiding question for this edited volume. The chapters discuss multidisciplinary perspectives and factors that contribute to the visibility of forced migration beyond a policy-centered discourse. They focus on the voices and agency of refugees in different countries and contexts. By including research, practical experiences and artistic methods, the volume will be of interest to readers from different academic disciplines and the arts as well as to practitioners.
The German Migration Integration Regime
Syrian refugees who gained asylum in Germany following the so-called refugee crisis in 2015 quickly entered into an ‘integration regime’ which produced a binary notion of ‘well integrated’ migrants versus refugees falling short of the narrow social and political definitions of a ‘good’ refugee. Etzel’s rich ethnographic study shows how refugees navigated this conditional inclusion. While some asylum seekers gained international protection, others were left with limited agency to demand government accountability for the ever-moving target of integration. Putting a spotlight on the inconsistencies and failings of a universal approach to integration, this is an important contribution to the wider field of migration and anthropology of the state.

Die Transformation des Handelns
Geographische Transformationsforschung war bislang vor allem Strukturanalyse. An diesem Defizit setzt diese handlungstheoretisch ausgerichtete und empirisch fundierte sozialgeographische Untersuchung an: die Auswirkungen der Wiedervereinigung auf das individuelle Handeln und insbesondere auf die eigene Erwerbsbiographie werden aus Sicht der Menschen in den neuen Bundeslandern dargestellt. Dabei zeigt sich, dass sich Strukturen zwar andern konnen, die Handlungsroutinen sich aber in vielen Fallen als resistent erweisen. So entstand eine Vielzahl sehr unterschiedlicher Wiedervereinigungsbilanzen. Dieses Ergebnis ist auch fur die Politik von Bedeutung, denn es macht deutlich, dass fur das Erreichen der "inneren Einheit" noch Handlungsbedarf besteht.
