The Organizational Embeddedness of Communities of Practice
This dissertation uncovers how informal and self-organized communities of practice as a source of learning and adaptability are embedded in their formal organizational surroundings. Based on an interpretative case study of three communities of practice within the German Federal Armed Forces, the author theorizes this embeddedness as shaped through cultural dynamics and leadership processes. In particular, the author draws on a practice lens and complexity leadership theory in explaining how communities of practice generate new resources (i.e., adaptability), produce and reproduce broader socio-cultural structures, and are enabled as well as influenced by formal leadership.
Critique of Inner Leadership
The ability to defend in a democracy requires justification because this form of government is fundamentally based on the freedom, development, and diversity of its citizens. Since the outbreak of the Ukraine war in 2022, we know that we can no longer afford the self-satisfied luxury of not being able to defend ourselves. Soldier and Politics Transformed
The present volume puts forward two propositions. First, the altered face of armed conflict in the early twenty-first century remains political in the sense that Clausewitz suggested to his readers in the early nineteenth century amid the nationalization of war and the eclipse of the old régimes of dynastic absolutist Europe. Second, this book reflects the author’s conviction that the men and women at arms of NATO and the European Union must know and understand one another within the respective national experiences of war and peace, especially as the soldier and politics evolve in and among the twenty-six NATO allies. Such knowledge forms the basis for sound policy and efficacious strategy in an age of proliferating conflict.

This study describes the inner design of military forces in a German democracy-Innere Fuehrung-in the face of new challenges. "Transformation" and its various manifestations, including EBAO and NCW/NCO are contrasted with Innere Fuehrung. Colonial Geography
Colonial Geography charts changes in conceptions of the relationship between people and landscapes in mainland Tanzania during the German colonial period. In German minds, colonial development would depend on the relationship between East Africans and the landscape. Colonial Geography argues that the most important element in German imperialism was not its violence but its attempts to apply racial thinking to the mastery and control of space. Utilizing approaches drawn from critical geography, the book argues that the development of a representational space of empire had serious consequences for German colonialism and the population of East Africa. This volume follows the intentions of the Clausewitz-Society as described by one of its former presidents: “to view the current tasks of politics and strategy as reflected in the insights of Carl von Clausewitz and thus examine which of the principles and insights formulated by Clausewitz are still important today and are thus endowed with an enduring validity”.
