As cities evolve architects are constantly searching for appropriate architectonic solutions, and in this book the authors present a systematic examination of innovative single-family houses and residential buildings in the context of presentday cities. The latest developments are reviewed in essays and thematic chapters discuss such topics as lowenergy building, the use of prefabricated materials, or low-budget building. A range of international examples from architects such as Wiel Arets, Shigeru Ban, Ben van Berkel, Kees Christiaanse, Philippe Gazeau, Frank O. Gehry, Steven Holl, Hans Kollhoff, Morger & Degelo, MVRDV, Jean Nouvel, Kas Oosterhuis, illustrate the subjects discussed. "Housing" and "Single-Family Housing" were previously published separately, each proving hugely popular. Now both volumes have been incorporated into a single, lowpriced edition.
Single-Family Housing follows the highly successful publication Housing. This volume explores the concept of contemporary innovative housing with particular reference to single-family housing using numerous international examples. Having investigated the topic of single-family housing over many years, the editors of this volume now provide an in-depth survey of their findings. Numerous examples are used not only to illustrate the various projects but also to demonstrate new possibilities. The latest research is examined in a theoretical essay, followed by three chapters: "The House as a Box"; "The House as a Device"; "The House as a Landscape." These explore topics including abstract residential programmes, prefabrication, low-budget housing and low energy housing. Around 40 buildings, (mostly realised) from architects including MVRDV, K. Sejima, T. Ishida, B. van Berkel, F.O. Gehry and W. Burnette are documented in detail. The findings are complemented by quotations and comments by many famous architects such as Jos Bosman, Rem Koolhaas, Josep Llinas, Dietmar Steiner and Mark Wigley.

"This two-volume catalogue of the 10th International Architecture Exhibition presents an anthology of ideas centered around this year's theme: the meta-city. The changes in the physical and social structure of today's city have resulted in a new kind of civilian agglomeration that extends beyond the traditional form, concept, and boundaries of the city, causing profound transformations in the composition of its population and working habits. The International Exhibition, curated by Richard Burdett, will focus on the transformations of cities around the world, featuring New York, London, Berlin, Moscow, Tokyo, Shanghai, Mumbai, Mexico City, São Paulo Beirut, Istanbul, Johannesburg, and Lagos. Additionally, the biennale will propound a manifesto for rational development of cities in the 21st century. This book will be the definitive catalogue of what is perhaps the most important architecture exhibition in the world."--Wrapper description.
AGENDA occupies the territory between a monograph, diary, and a collection of essays, interviews, and conversations, produced by JDS Architects with a wide range of contributors and collaborators. Starting from the belief that an agenda is not simply an expression of individual intentions, but rather a vector for the production of new realities, AGENDA addresses the need for architecture to transform itself in an era of ecological and economic crisis. Change, the buzzword of the last U.S. presidential campaign, is indeed the order of the day, and AGENDA explores exactly what kind of change will be needed if architects are to assume a political and social agency in this new landscape. The book seeks to define not only the work of JDS Architects, but also the challenges and situations confronting young architectural practices emerging at a time of crisis. An ambitious attempt to describe the conditions within which architecture is produced today.
Those in Denmark who seek innovative architects will inevitably come up against the names of Mikkel Frost, Carsten Primdahl and Kolja Nielsen who in 2001 joined forces under the name of CEBRA in Aarhus. The trio are regarded as pioneers in Scandinavian architecture and have been running a branch office in Abu Dhabi since 2015 in order to implement a major cultural project within the historic centre of the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The team of forty-six employees as at present shares its intense passion for architecture over a total of 1,200 pages. The chronological journey through this catalogue of works is elaborately illustrated with a broad selection of drawings, diagrams and photographs.
