Middletown

Middletown, founded in 1743, is one of Rhode Island's earliest settlements. Rich in history and natural beauty, its glacial soil has been farmed for at least 1,000 years. The farmers of Middletown were hardworking men and women who were interested in art, culture, and politics. Also passionate about horses, they produced the first American horse breed, the Narragansett Pacer. Although farming is no longer a major occupation, a farming renaissance is under way, generated by organic and local foods movements. Over the years, the Navy has become the largest employer on the island, having established facilities there during World War II. The scenic beauty of Middletown has caused a large section of it to be called "Paradise." This unique region, inspiration to generations of artists, has played an important part in the history of American art.

Mythic themes and philosophical probing in film as an art form, as seen in works of Preston Sturges, Jean Cocteau, Stanley Kubrick, and various other filmmakers. Film is the supreme medium for mythmaking. The gods and heroes of mythology are both larger than life and deeply human; they teach us about the world, and they tell us a good story. Similarly, our experience of film is both distant and intimate. Cinematic techniques—panning, tracking, zooming, and the other tools in the filmmaker's toolbox—create a world that is unlike reality and yet realistic at the same time. We are passive spectators, but we also have a personal relationship with the images we are seeing. In Cinematic Mythma...

This volume contains Ibsen's two most famous and frequently read, studied and performed plays about women: A Doll's House (1879), his first international success, which 'exploded like a bomb into contemporary life', and Hedda Gabler (1890), now one of his most popular plays, but greeted at first with bewilderment and outrage ('The play is simply a bad escape of moral sewage-gas' Pictorial World). Also included is An Enemy of the People (1883), whose central character was the actor Konstantin Stanislavski's favourite role.Michael Meyer's translations are 'crisp and cobweb-free, purged of verbal Victoriana' (Kenneth Tynan)

Buxton, Hollis, and Limington

Maine's Saco and Little Ossipee Rivers have been the life blood of the towns of Buxton, Hollis, and Limington for over 150 years. This delightful collection of over 200 black-and-white images vividly illustrates the two rivers' influence on these communities, and details the lives and times of area residents. Once known as an integral part of Maine's logging industry, Buxton, Hollis, and Limington and the rivers along which they reside were sources of electricity and economic prosperity for the surrounding region and the state. Pictured here are the residents and founders who built and established these towns, as well as local celebrities such as author Kate Douglas Wiggin. In this, the first pictorial history of the region, the solid foundations on which Buxton, Hollis, and Limington are based emerge in the faces, buildings, and stories captured in these photographs.

Broken Wings

Demons. Yeshua Star is deeply ensconced in a level of the world most people do not even know exists, let alone recognize. Her world is one of demons, dream stalkers and ancient immortals who were once worshipped as gods but now co-exist with the rest of society-like Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams who now runs the local opium den. Angels. The cynical but sassy Yeshua Star is an unofficial contractor for the Church, handling those tasks that go hand in hand with a public policy of disavowal. When the angels come knocking on Yeshua's door, claiming she is an incarnated angel, she and her self-appointed sidekick Chaz find themselves pulled into one of the toughest situations they have ever had to face. Choices. Armageddon is looming on the horizon, with one faction of the angels preparing to set the Beast free from the pit of the Abyss. Using all of the knowledge they can piece together from the various groups and their hidden agendas, Yeshua has to make a major decision that will decide the fate of humanity-does she stop it-or let it happen?
