Liturgical Catechesis of Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest

The number of Catholic communities with no priest available to celebrate Sunday Eucharist has increased steadily over 60 years. For many, other forms of Sunday celebration are the statistical norm. This dramatic development coincides with Vatican II's insistence on liturgical catechesis: for the baptised the main source of their Christian spirit comes from active participation in the liturgy, especially the Sunday Eucharist. Celebrating the liturgy in all its symbolic fullness leads to inner participation in the mystery. A more profound appropriation of this living relationship with Christ comes about through well-celebrated rites and reflection on personal experience of the rites. Yet, litu...

Three churches have recently produced liturgies for 'extended communion'. This is the distribution of previously consecrated elements at a public service by lay people or a deacon in the absence of a priest. This development began in the Roman Catholic Church with the Vatican 'Directory on Sunday Worship in the absence of a priest' in 1988. The Methodist Church produced a service of Extended Communion in 1999, and the Church of England authorized 'Public Worship with Communion by Extension' in 2001. In this book Phillip Tovey examines these churches to discover the reasons for the production of these services and their theological rationale. An in-depth examination of case studies draws conclusions highly relevant to the wider church.

Mission for Diversity

In this multi-cultural and multi-religious world, do Christian mission studies have any place in the academic realm? What theological possibilities and practical insights did Vatican II create for missiology? In this book, experts from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, and North America respond to these questions. They explore "mission" as "intercultural studies," and they adopt decolonial thinking to privilege knowledges from the margins of our wounded world. Themes, such as interculturality, interreligious dialogue and inculturation, justice, peace building, and reconciliation, expand Vatican II to celebrate "mission" among and with the nations. From Page to Proclamation

This pioneering work invites readers to embark on a transformative journey through the heart of liturgical worship and scriptural proclamation. It introduces a new tier to biblical hermeneutics, exploring the ways in which the liturgical event and the ecclesial community color the interpretation of Scripture. Weaving together insights from Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics with the rich tapestry of Catholic liturgy, the author proposes that the meaning of a proclaimed Scripture passage emerges not from an analysis of the text itself, but in the vibrant interplay of multiple horizons--Bible, Lectionary, homilist, and worshiper. Through a lens of "play" and "festival," the intricate relatio...
