Es geht um grundsätzliche Überlegungen aus theologisch-ethischer Perspektive1 mit Bezug auf die Sterbehilfe in Langzeitpflegeinstitutionen. Wenn ich immer wieder den Begriff des Altersheimes brauche, dann bin ich mir dessen Konnotationen bewusst, doch meine ich zugleich, dass der Begriff der Langzeitpflegeinstitutionen überaus euphemisch ist. Sterbehilfe ist ein umfassender Begriff, so dass ich mich auf Sterbehilfe als Beihilfe zum Suizid beschränken werde. Dies werde ich in Teil I erklären (I/2). Die aktuelle Diskussion über die Zulassung von Sterbehilfeorganisationen in Altersheimen im Kanton Zürich zeigt, dass die Stellungnahmen zu diesem Problemfeld äusserst kontrovers sind, weil grundlegende ethische Werte zur Disposition stehen (I/1.)

The Man Who Crucified Himself is the history of a sensational nineteenth-century medical case. In 1805 a shoemaker called Mattio Lovat attempted to crucify himself in Venice. His act raised a furore, and the story spread across Europe. For the rest of the century Lovat’s case fuelled scientific and popular debates on medicine, madness, suicide and religion. Drawing on Italian, German, English and French sources, Maria Böhmer traces the multiple readings of the case and identifies various 'interpretive communities'. Her meticulously researched study sheds new light on Lovat’s case and offers fresh insights on the case narrative as a genre - both epistemic and literary.
Devil Theatre
The so-called "Devil Theatre" is here set against its context of non-dramatic texts on possession and exorcism, providing many new insights. Representations of demonic possession and exorcism rituals abound in English Renaissance drama, an area which this book seeks to illuminate by comparison with non-dramatic works. The author investigates stage images of possessionin relation to a range of early modern demonological, theological and medical prose texts on the subject, looking specifically at how the theatre responded to these texts. He argues that the stage appropriated debates over demonicpossession to explore the competing roles of the inner life and the body in early modern definitions of selfhood. The theatre also employed the contemporary controversy over possession and exorcism to investigate the politics ofreligion, and to consider the nature of monarchic power. Moreover, because demonic possession cases and exorcism rituals were frequently dismissed by conformist writers as a piece of theatre, they offered an opportunity to reflecton the nature of drama and role-playing.
