Principles of Cell Proliferation

Controlled expansion of cell populations is a fundamental feature of living organisms, being a finely-tuned balance between cell proliferation and cell death. This book aims to explain the molecular mechanisms that lie behind the multiplication and survival of eukaryotic cells. This encompasses both the normal regulation of cell populations in development or physiological adaptation and pathological mechanisms of cell cycle control in cancer. Principles of Cell Proliferation progressively introduces the function of growth factors, receptors, signal transduction pathways, gene expression and the conserved mechanisms of the cell cycle engine. This provides a context for understanding the mecha...

Cell Proliferation

Cellular proliferation, as a result of cell growth and cell division, is one of the most fundamental biological processes. Although there is a great deal which remains unclear, significant advances have been made in past decades in our understanding of the process and regulation of cell proliferation. There is considerable evidence that this understanding of different cells and cell proliferation behaviour provides useful information that may be of major importance in disease control, drug discovery, biomaterial development and medical device improvement. This book studies and discusses recent developments in the field of cell proliferation including: the controlling factors for cell proliferation; changes occurring in the cells; therapeutic effects of the biological molecules to the cells; and analysis of cell proliferation based on the quantal concept. Furthermore, the effects that biomaterials and drugs have on cell proliferation are also reviewed in this book.

Regulation of Cell Proliferation and Differentiation

In 1974 The National Institute on Aging established a somatic cell genetic resource for aging research at the Institute for Medical Research in Camden, New Jersey. Within this program there is a yearly workshop to promote theory and concept develop ment in aging research with the specific purpose of addressing the use of genetically marked cells for aging research and to stimulate interest in aging research by workers in a variety of disciplines. This monograph, The Regulation of Cell Proliferation and Differentiation, is the result of the first workshop held May 15-17, 1975. The concept of the workshop was to consider two main areas: First, a discussion of clinical syndromes expressing as a...

Stem Cell Proliferation and Differentiation

The body contains many cellular systems that require the continuous production of new, fully functional, differentiated cells to replace cells lacking or having limited self-renewal capabilities that die or are damaged during the lifetime of an individual. Such systems include the epidermis, the epithelial lining of the gut, and the blood. For example, erythrocytes (red blood cells) lack nuclei and thus are incapable of self-replication. They have a life span in the circulation of about 120 days. Mature granulocytes, which also lack proliferative capacity, have a much shorter life span - typically 12 hours, though this may be reduced to only two or three hours in times of serious tissue infe...

Trends in Stem Cell Proliferation and Cancer Research

The book will discuss the molecular mechanisms of cancer diseases, stem cell proliferation and transformation into cancer cells beyond the physiological processes that occur in normal stem cell biology. Some of the key oncogenic events in cancer and their signaling pathways that regulate cell division cycle progression will be described considering prospects for using such knowledge in advanced cancer therapy. Each chapter shall provide an invaluable resource for information on the most current advances in the field, with discussion of controversial issues and areas of emerging importance

Molecular And Cellular Approaches To The Control Of Proliferation And Differentiation

Molecular and Cellular Approaches to the Control of Proliferation and Differentiation focuses on molecular and cellular approaches used to control cell proliferation and differentiation. This book discusses the basic mechanisms involved in the regulation of cell growth, emphasizing the coupling of proliferation and the progressive expression of several specific cellular phenotypes. This text is organized into three sections encompassing 12 chapters and begins with an introduction to cell proliferation and how it is regulated by growth factors and nuclear protooncogenes in cell proliferation. The book then discusses mitosis and its investigation by means of the cell biological, genetic, bioch...

Cell Proliferation and Apoptosis

Cell Proliferation and Apoptosis provides a detailed practical guide to cell proliferation and apoptosis detection methods. A novel approach combining both these areas allows important comparisons to be made. Topics covered include all aspects of tissue handling from collection, storage, fixation and processing through to locating and quantifying cells in different stages of the cell cycle. This book is an essential and comprehensive practical guide to these important and expanding areas.
