The Mechanical Turk

A THRILLING ALTERNATE HISTORY, STEAMPUNK ADVENTURE FILLED WITH ACTION, DIVERSE LOCATIONS AND CHARACTERS. The Ottoman Empire's dominance resurged when they unearthed the secrets of Greek Fire and steam technology, but Angelique Morreaux will be damned if she allows that to stop her from exacting her revenge. Born into a life of servitude in a foreign land, Angelique escaped and has been plotting and training ever since. Her scheme to hurt the Ottomans, however, did not include a British policeman being shackled to her as chaperone. Nor did Constable James Nathaniel Beechworth ever imagine when he swore service to King and country that he would one day find himself dragged across the world, escorting a criminal to the very enemy's heart: Istanbul. Just who that enemy is, however, is what they must uncover. Is it the Janissary, using the young Ottoman Sultan as a puppet? Or the rebel group Asena, who claim they are the only true and pure Turkish people? And what of the rumours of a far deeper conspiracy? If Angelique and Beechworth can somehow work together and survive, perhaps they will uncover the truth of The Mechanical Turk.

Two years after her deadly battle with the Umbra, Stacey has a new threat to contend with, after having sacrificed so much, and lost so many people: PTSD. Having to put down the very people she's sworn to protect, and struggling with nightmares that she isn't sure aren’t visions of a a far greater threat, Stacey’s already taut nerves are ready to snap. What is the place of religion in modern political systems? This volume addresses that question by focusing on ten countries across several geographic areas: Western and East-Central Europe, North America, the Middle East and South Asia. These countries are comparable in the sense that they are committed to constitutional rule, have embraced a more or less secular culture, and have formal guarantees of freedom of religion. Yet in all the cases examined here religion impinges on the political system in the form of legal establishment, semi-legitimation, subvention, and/or selective institutional arrangements and its role is reflected in cultural norms, electoral behaviour and public policies. The relationship between religion and politics comes in many varieties in differing countries, yet all are faced with three major challenges: modernity, democracy and the increasingly multi-ethnic and multi-religious nature of their societies.
