Political parties are one of the core institutions of democracy. But in democracies around the world—rich and poor, Western and non-Western—there is growing evidence of low or declining public confidence in parties. In membership, organization, and popular involvement and commitment, political parties are not what they used to be. But are they in decline, or are they simply changing their forms and functions? In contrast to authors of most previous works on political parties, which tend to focus exclusively on long-established Western democracies, the contributors to this volume cover many regions of the world. Theoretically, they consider the essential functions that political parties p...

Parties and Their Members

Why would parties continue to care about membership enrollment in an age of television campaigning and direct-mail fundraising? To answer this question, Parties and their Members traces organizing strategies employed by British and German membership parties during the past half century. Using careful analysis of historical records and interviews with party officials, the author shows that party organizers have reacted to technological and social developments by modifying their ideas about how members can help parties achieve their goals.

Forty-six historic tales of murder and mayhem on a global scale: This book contains true stories, authenticated through the use of both modern and contemporary sources. They range from the year 1337 BCE through 2006 CE, from the United States and Europe to the Mid-east and the Orient. The murderers range from incompetent to highly competent and from despicable to glorious. The victims were prominent politically and, in some cases, financially. Some deserved to die, most did not. All four assassinations of US Presidents are included, as are three attempted Presidential assassinations. Although the stories make interesting reading by themselves, the grouping of them in a single volume gives breadth and allows the reader to understand the scope of the assassination phenomenon, to see trends and to assess their value.

In the acclaimed Politics of Democratic Consolidation, Nikiforos Diamandouros, Richard Gunther, and their co-authors showed how democratization unfolded in Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain, culminating in consolidated democratic regimes. This volume continues that analysis, posing the basic question: What kind of democratic politics emerged in those countries? It presents systematic analyses of the basic institutions of government and of the dynamics of electoral competition in the four countries (set in comparative context alongside several other democracies), as well as detailed studies of the evolution of the major parties, their electorates, their ideologies, and their performances in ...

Politics, Parties, and Elections in Turkey

The contributors to this volume assess the intertwined effects of party fragmentation and voter volatility in Turkey. Presenting a wealth of data, they illuminate the trajectory of democratic consolidation, as well as underlying issues of representation, participation, and govern-ability.

The persistence and the relatively strong electoral performance of peasant parties in some Central Eastern European countries appears puzzling. The paper investigates the strategies of these parties in the light of social and economic modernization. As a successful model for agrarian adaptation the Scandinavian Center parties' move to 'catch-all' strategies are contrasted with the Hungarian FKGP and the Polish PSt. It becomes clear that the incentive structure for these parties in CEE transition societies is much different and therefore less conducive to this kind of adaptation. In fact, rather a rightist-populist retreat and in the Police case the reliance on a continuously strong peasant vote in addition to seeking state resources is being pursued.
