The Voice of Water

Cevat Çapan's poetry manages to sound ancient and traditional while being firmly rooted in today's world; it is both thoroughly Turkish and at the same time European - and beyond that, part of a greater world literature. Many of his poems are personal, and in this book he looks back at times past, remembering friends and family and places that have touched his life for ever. The natural world is ever-present, especially the sea which moves restlessly, powerfully, relentlessly throughout, and the lucidity and simple beauty of these poems in Ruth Christie's exquisite translation remain with you long after you have put this book down.

East West Mimesis

East West Mimesis follows the plight of German-Jewish humanists who escaped Nazi persecution by seeking exile in a Muslim-dominated society. Kader Konuk asks why philologists like Erich Auerbach found humanism at home in Istanbul at the very moment it was banished from Europe. She challenges the notion of exile as synonymous with intellectual isolation and shows the reciprocal effects of German émigrés on Turkey's humanist reform movement. By making literary critical concepts productive for our understanding of Turkish cultural history, the book provides a new approach to the study of East-West relations. Central to the book is Erich Auerbach's Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature, written in Istanbul after he fled Germany in 1936. Konuk draws on some of Auerbach's key concepts—figura as a way of conceptualizing history and mimesis as a means of representing reality—to show how Istanbul shaped Mimesis and to understand Turkey's humanist reform movement as a type of cultural mimesis.

Recovering the oft-neglected role of women in Ottoman high society and power politi, this book brings to life the women who made their mark in a male domain. Though historical records tend to favour the glitter of palaces over the trials of daily life, Goodwin also reconstructs ordinary women's domestic toil. As the Ottoman Empire first expanded and then shrank, women travelled its width and breadth whether out of necessity or merely for pleasure. Some women owned slaves while others suffered the misfortune of being enslaved. Goodwin examines the laws which governed women's lives from the harem to the humblest tasks. This perceptive study of Ottoman life culminates with the nineteenth century and explores the advent of modernity and its impact on women at a time of imperial decline. 'The best book on the subject and likely to remain so for some time.' Times Literary Supplement 'A fascinating account by the foremost authority on the Ottoman period.' The Middle East 'Goodwin is an exceptional scholar with an insight that reveals itself in every sentence.' Asian Affairs 'Offers excellent scholarship into a history that has been much neglected by the West.' Judaism Today

Muhafazakar Düşünce 49.Sayı

Meş’um darbe girişiminin ardından istikbaline ve istiklaline sahip çıkanları Türk halkının duruşunu tarihe not düşmek, darbeye giden süreci sosyolojik olarak değerlendirmek ve 15 Temmuz’u kavramsallaştırmak amacıyla duyurduğumuz yazı çağrısına çok sayıda hocamız kıymetli çalışmalarıyla destek verdiler. 15 Temmuz şehitlerine ithaf ettiğimiz bu sayıda; Faruk Karaarslan, “15 Temmuz Darbe Girişimi ve Muhafazakârlığın Türkiye Bağlamı -Türkiye’de Muhafazakârlığı Yeniden Düşünmek-” başlıklı makalesinde 15 Temmuz gecesi darbeye direnen kitle üzerinden Türk muhafazakârlığının yeni dönemini tartışıyor. Karaarslan çalışmasında muhafazakârlık kavramının kullanımına dair tartışmalardan hareketle Türkiye’de sosyal bilimlerin tekrar tartışılmasını gerektiğini iddia ediyor.

İhsan Erdinçli’nin makalesi, 16. yüzyıldan itibaren türleri, işlevleri ve sayıları artan meyhanelerin Osmanlı’da eğlence kültürünün önemli bir parçası haline geldiğini gösteriyor. Derviş Koyuncu makalesinde Klasik dönemden Tanzimat’a kadar alkollü içeceklerin vergilendirilme politikasını değerlendiriyor. Sada Payır’ın makalesi ise Osmanlı’nın son döneminin en büyük eğlencelerinden olan Tatavla Karnavalı’nın toplumsal ve siyasal anlamı üzerinde duruyor. Toplumsal Tarih’in Eylül sayısında...
