The mass of uranium contained in a CANDU fuel bundle is dependent on the UO2 density, cladding dimensions/tolerances, pellet geometry and axial/diametral clearances. Economic incentives exist for maximizing the UO2 content of manufactured bundles. Since 1980, the average uranium mass of 37-element and 28-element bundles produced for Ontario Hydro reactors has increased by up to 3 percent. This paper investigates the effect of this mass increase on the dimensional performance of the fuel.
