Cullman County was established in 1877 in large part from the west side of Blount and the east side of Winston counties. Today, the few old cemeteries which existed in those counties in the early days are found within the borders of Cullman. The cemetery listings in this four volume set were conducted by the author beginning in 2003 and ending in early 2006. An attempt was made to personally visit every cemetery in Cullman County and record information from each readable monument. Volume 2 of this series covers alphabetically cemeteries E through G, beginning with the East Battleground Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery and concluding with the Garden City Cemetery. It also includes the large Cullman City Cemetery. The volumes are filled with photos of many of the old cemetery sites and notes describing the company and unit of most of the old Civil War era veterans. This set of books is vital to any serious student of Cullman County genealogy and history.

David Irons was graduating first in his class at Texas A&M University, but though he was a brilliant student his real love at the college was football. His graduating placement meant less to him in the face of his disappointment at not being good enough to go on to play football for the Dallas Cowboys, but he was left with what was, to him, a lesser alternative: go to medical school and join his father's practice as an orthopedic surgeon. That was before a strange incident in the mountains of Colorado changed his physical make-up and abilities. When his friend, Scot Morgan of the Cowboys, saw him run, he immediately arranged a tryout. David ended up with his original dream, playing for the C...

After the Civil War, the Yankee textile industry began a steady transfer south, bringing with it the tradition of a mill village, usually owned by the mill’s owner, where the workers and their families lived. The new game of baseball quickly became a foundation of mill village life. A rich tradition of textile league baseball in South Carolina is here reconstructed from newspaper accounts and interviews with former players and fans. Players such as “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and Champ Osteen made their marks as “lintheads” in these semipro leagues. The fierce rivalries between competing mills and the impact of the teams on mill life are recounted. Appendices list club records and rosters for many of the teams from 1880 through 1955.
